A Mexican cartel has threatened recording artist Peso Pluma ahead of his debut at the MTV Video Music Awards and his Oct. 14 concert at Caliente Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico.

A banner threatening the 24-year-old Mexican singer, whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, was posted on a bridge in the border town of Tijuana on Tuesday. It was signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, reported The Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network.

"This goes to Peso Pluma, refrain from presenting yourself on October 14 because it will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue, you show up and we are going to (break you)," the banner said.

Pluma, who performed at the VMA's on Tuesday night, has not commented on the threat. Several of his upcoming shows have been postponed or canceled, though it's unclear whether that's because of the threats.

Peso Pluma’s representatives did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's requests for comment Wednesday.

What the hell did he say?

He made references to El Chapo in a song of his, and this being a rival gang, they don't take kindly to that.

The lyrics of their songs, like those of other regional Mexican artists, usually talk about narcos or things they do or relate to people who are enemies of some cartels, etc. That is why the threat. It has happened with other artists. Chalino Sanchez and Valentin Elizalde have been among the celebrities in that genre who have been gunned down by the cartel. It is said that the plane where singer Jenni Rivera died in 2012 crashed because of the narco. And so there are many more examples.

That is actually scary how they got that much reach to deliver their threats :bradley:

So they sing about narco wars, cartels and stuff of that nature, and people act surprised when they receive threats? Don't get me wrong.. I don't wish him harm at all.. but it's time to drift away from romanticizing drug lord and cartels.

You can still make music about partying and d*ugs and having fun.. but why involve your career, family, friends with that stuff?

Mess. They've straight up killed singers before, and it's been rumored that Jenni Rivera was laundering money or something (she had performed at private parties for cartels) when her plane crashed.

Apparently he had the crowds shout El Chapo's name in a call and response at a recent show. The wild thing is he's from Jalisco (where CJNG are from), but was chanting the name of El Chapo and allegedly praising the Sinaloa Cartel (CJNG's rivals).

It in no way justifies what is happening to him, but I am baffled that he did that considering cartels have gone after singers before.
