Off topic but omg.. reading this post again years later I just realised she actually said "I'm not not a feminist" double negative, meaning she's saying she is a feminist   I feel bad now because I remember thinking at the time she was renouncing feminism because my brain skipped the double-up. But she's saying people call her 'not feminist' and she's renouncing that title

first of all Ariana is a white woman despite what she wants y’all to think lol so it wasn’t ONLY women of color

 

but idk! Maybe just the fact that many women of color are at the top of the music game. Who else could she have named that she didn’t… Dua lipa? Taylor swift? I guess?

Apart from her weirdly bad grammar (very odd for such a clearly talented songwriter and poet) which made it a bit difficult to read at times, I never understood why this got the backlash it got. Yeah, it was a bit out of the blue and something had clearly struck a nerve in a private capacity on that particular day to bring this on seeing as no one had called her out publicly to warrant this but to cite it as racist was ridiculous and didn't hold any water when scrutinised. The fact people chose to focus on the race of the women she mentioned (some of them were white, white Hispanic and/or half white too) instead of the aspect of their lyrical content that Lana explicitly states that she is comparing herself to, is very telling. God forbid a female artist express the hypocrisy towards her, let's shut her up and accuse her of being bigoted before she tells too many industry truths. In the words of Lana herself: "I'll pray for ya."

 

I daresay this outspoken nature is partly why she didn't get any Grammy nominations for the amazing COTCC album or Blue Bannisters. I only hope the critics judge the music and not the personality for the upcoming ceremony.

They weren't all WOC and a few were half white. Doja Cat is half white, Ariana is white, Camila is white Hispanic, Cardi is half white Hispanic and Kehlani's race has never been fully stated but they look as if they may be half white. Not only that, Lana is friendly with some of them. She even did Don't Call Me Angel with Ariana. I think people just saw those names and when listed one after the other, blindly assumed they were all the same and hadn't actually researched or even thought about their actual racial make-up. She named them specifically because when she wrote this in spring 2020, these were the most prominent female names who had had hit songs/albums who wrote similar content to herself (if they were all white she would have totally listed them, but that's who were the most popular). Yet, when they did it, they were praised and in contrast, Lana had suffered criticism from critics and public alike from day one for the same thing they were being praised for. She said she was so affected by it that she changed her writing style to win some respect and asked why she couldn't be genuine like those women are. She didn't call out men because her piece was based aroud how women are judged in the industry and was overall female-focused. She didn't say they were keeping her from making her music but just giving specific examples of those who make similar lyrical content to her who get a lot more respect from critics. It wasn't to hate on those women but just to be specific as she knew the public would demand to know who she was referencing so may as well get it all out now. And even Lana has dabbled in a hip hop sound since the start with her production and featuring occasional rappers and RnB artists in her work. She even sings "I grew up on hip hop" in one of her first ever songs and mentions hip hop artists she looks up to in early interviews. As someone who likes some of the artists she lists, I have no problem with what she had to say and also wonder why some artists are praised for stuff that others are not. 

Anyone who even thought the race of the women mentioned was remotely relevant were completely missing the point. Their lyrical content and how it was perceived vs. how Lana got treated when she did the same thing and the hypocrisy in the music industry as a result was the crux of the matter. But no, people just saw a woman speaking her mind and jumped right to the most extreme of conclusions in order to not engage with what she was actually saying. Story of many women's lives.

It really doesn't take that long to read and every part of it is necessary to fully illustrate my point and leave nothing to misinterpretation in a way that a super short post couldn't. But to reply to your post in short...

1. One of those women was white and most are half white. Their races were nothing to do with what Lana was writing about, she was just listing the most popular women who made music like hers in that year and she actually is friendly with some of these women.

2. Men weren't called out as the piece was all about how women are treated in the industry and how their experience differs from woman to woman.

3. At no point does she say that those people stopped her from making her music, the whole piece is about asking why these women talk about certain issues and get praised for it while Lana does the same thing and gets criticised.

4. Lana has no problem with hip hop as she features hip hop production in lots of her songs, sings "I grew up in hip hop" in one of her songs, features hip hop artists in her work and even looks up to hip hop artists.

My favorite thing from this moment was that around this time we had major discourse of Ariana blackfishing/the internet reminding people she was white and then the same exact people said Lana only listed POC in her “list”, which includes Ariana at the beginning
