Very great numbers for Barbie! Grace said ticket presales are matching the Little Mermaid’s. Warner Bros finally making money for Joker 2 promo. :billie:

On social media, I keep seeing straight “men” saying that Barbie’s hype is all artificial/only the “alphabet people” are actually excited, and that Oppenheimer will be a lot more successful than “that gay ****” :rip:

it’s funny how many people must think Barbie is a ‘girls movie’ and not a campy classic waiting to happen.

Are we surprised? The brand itself mostly " caters"to girls from a conventionally social aspect. The Barbie brand would have to spend a lot of money rebranding to appeal to boys and have parents allow their boys to play with them. If you asked society "girls play with ____" more than half would answer Barbies.

I'm genuinely ecstatic i cannot wait for this movie - only questionable move so far has been that weird nicki and ice spice song... doesn't feel on theme to me at all but

A friend of mine is renting out an entire screen room at the cinema and a whole bunch of us are going to see it in head-to-toe pink together :enigma:

They're of course being gross about it but the fact that both of these movies could turn out to be successes is so exciting as a film fan and box office water. That is of course not what they're talking about, they're just being homophobic and nasty.

But it is exciting to see two films like this going out alongside each other. Oppenheimer tracking for $40 million domestic is fantastic for a 3 hour hard R rated film that's apparently quite difficult to stomach. And the tracking for Barbie is fantastic for a film that many thought was going to be an outright failure upon its announcement. It's been a long time since we've seen two films that have genuine pedigree drum up such interest from audiences, and it's also been so interesting to see how they've essentially been cross promoting each other.

Yes, totally. It's very exciting! I actually can't remember when we had two films that catered to such different audiences, with the same amount of hype, release at the same time. regardless, it will be a day well spent at the movies.

I do remember when The Dark Knight was released. Mamma Mia! was released in the same weekend as the thing "the moms would go see". I saw both in the same day and it was one of the most fun movie going experiences of my life. And while The Dark Knight was such a cultural moment, the strategy worked for lil' ol Mamma Mia! which earned surprising returns.

there’s a difference between camp and campy btw lol

Camp is Mommy Dearest and Ariana Debose at the BAFTA’s - Camp doesn’t know it’s camp / it’s not in on the joke.

Campy is the barbie movie
