CNN: if you’re white, you may be guilty of “Digital Blackface”

I can’t y’all :anveeroy:

Maybe you shared that viral video of Kimberly “Sweet Brown” Wilkins telling a reporter after narrowly escaping an apartment fire, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

Perhaps you posted that meme of supermodel Tyra Banks exploding in anger on “America’s Next Top Model” (“I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!”). Or maybe you’ve simply posted popular GIFs, such as the one of NBA great Michael Jordan crying, or of drag queen RuPauldeclaring, “Guuuurl…”

If you’re Black and you’ve shared such images online, you get a pass. But if you’re White, you may have inadvertently perpetuated one of the most insidious forms of contemporary racism.

You may be wearing “digital blackface.”

using meme/gif with POC means you don't care what is the color of the person in the meme/gif, you use it to because of the expression of the person and not the color of the person. CNN trying to

I feel like there should be more focus on individuals posing as POC when they are not rather than simple gif usage.

After reading the full article, it's more nuanced than the headline suggests. The author communicates that if you're White and you use Black stereotypes as humor, that's insensitive. The article explains that it's not using the gifs that's the problems, it's if it perpetuates a Black stereotype for laughs or not.

I know everyone wants to laugh this off but I see some truth in this. The gifs you use online are meant to be an extension of your own expressions and emotions. Using a gif of a POC is not inherently wrong but it becomes a problem when that gif usage begins to caricaturize a segment of the population. I find gifs of women, especially black women tend to be prevalent on these forums, especially in contexts of humor or anger, and I often wonder if there is some underlying bias there. I am not saying I am not guilty of this because I use plenty of gifs too. Just something to think about.

But Oprah telling "what is the truth" is using for the phrase, not for Oprah. If Kate Blanchett would have said something like that, then there would have been her .gif. This article is stupid and it only creates more hatred in the ignorant people.

So it means you can only use those gifs if you’re black, doesn’t it?
