jsn 1,669
The extra sad thing is that Knoxville is considered one of the best places to get treatment in all of east Tennessee, and articles mentioning the autopsy make it sound like she had multiple issues that the hospital didn't even bother looking into. This whole situation really makes me see that place in another light after I've heard everyone praise it as the "better option" than other places all my life. Emvee 8,825
This country should be ashamed of itself. We have failed in almost everything except for knowing how to wage war. This is a country of guns and corporate interests, not people.

I read some posts saying that she sought help at multiple hospitals but did not have the funds or insurance and was turned away. I am not sure on the truth to that but I am inclined to believe that was the case.

Most hospitals in the US are allowed to turn people away for lack of insurance

Future Lovers 7,537
My hometown. I would like to say people here have made a big fuss, but they have not. This has been in the news but is mostly being glossed over with an “oh sad”. It feels nasty. The apathy. I hate it here. p

See and this is the thing: We ARE the better option. But that is less praise for Knoxville than it is criticism of Tennessee. Here in Knoxville we have 5 hospitals (4 adult, one children). Each hospital is wildly different to the other and while two are fine, the other two are very problematic (the Children’s Hospital is one of the best in the country though and I spent a lot of time there as a patient when I was a minor). But that being said, they all have their issues in different areas and a lot of it comes down to the lack of care for hospitals and schools that aren’t the university from the local government. Tons and tons and tons of cash has been directed toward beautifying our university campus and preserving our historical sights which is fine to a point, but it most definitely has come at the expense of critical care for our basic necessities. Knoxville is a city on the rise and as such we have available space and a rapidly improving aesthetic. We have a thriving arts scene and even tend to attract more liberals due to the university. But we are still in a red state, in a red county, with a super conservative mayor under an even more conservative governor. The effects of that trickle down and we see things like this. Knoxville’s beauty does hide core issues that have gone unaddressed. And even with that, we are still your best option in this part of the state. East Tennessee is a very poor area and Knoxville sits as the “Nashsville of the East” due to it being in line with cities like Nashville and Memphis, but outside the city you will see some of the worst the state has to offer.
