Canada continues to struggle with a multi decade housing shortage that keeps getting worse and construction continues to lag behind the needs of population growth

 

As Canada increases immigration targets to 500,000 a year to help offset ageing population and labor shortage, housing needs will become even more pressing

 

Meanwhile to make a bad combination, the sector in the economy with the most severe labor shortage continues to be the construction and skilled trades sector. A shortage that may get even worse in upcoming years as construction workers are disproportionately older and a mass wave of retirements are expected

 

In a win-win decision for both illegal immigrants and the best interests of the Nation, Canada is now offering a path for illegal immigrants without work permits to legalize themselves more easily if they work in the construction sector specifically

 

It is hoped this will encourage more construction workers to stay here and build a career in the trades

I often think of trying out construction since so many level entry positions with no experience depending on the company reach up to $40/h in my Province....

 

But then I think how much I don't want inconsistent work commutes or hard labor

At least they offer a path to citizenship. Here in the USA, migrant workers are ESSENTIAL in the agriculture industry and yes the government knows they are here, and yet they are not offered a path to citizenship. They are just abused for their labor and paid less than minimum wage to keep product prices low.

This is false. In Canada there is not a “labour shortage”, nor even a housing shortage. When it comes to housing, the shortage is with affordable housing, such as low income apartments. Cities are spending so much on luxury developments and towers rather than affordable complexes with low rents. The shortage isn’t with labour and work either, it’s with workers. Healthcare worker shortage, trades worker shortage, etc. Provinces are seeking to international healthcare workers to come to Canada and incentivize their move to work in the country and fill the need for that sector. Trades needs more workers to get more housing built, etc. Provincial governments are doing the most damage through Canada, especially the conservative provincial governments. They’re too victim playing and blaming the federal government for everything rather than focusing on doing something about the needs of the provinces. 
 

And another problem is a lot of lazy Canadian people who don’t want to work low paying jobs so instead they choose not to work and collect things like welfare.

I agree about the part that not enough affordable housing has been built and that some of the luxury stuff is excessive

 

But everything suggests the shortage is real tho. That's not a lie

 

Go to almost any apartment complex and there's few or no vacancies. Try renting a basement and your always up against others also trying to get the rental...

 

Canada also has the lowest number of housing units to population in the G7 and would need another 1.4 million to reach the average

 

And the constant buyer's market also shows a lot of chronic high bidding cuz of competition. Only now that interest rate went up we finally got some cooling in prices, even so it hasn't been as drastic as some who said we were in a bubble were expecting 

 

I do not think the shortage is a lie at all. Everything indicates it's real

 

Edit: as for the labor shortage I don't know why u don't think it isn't real. We have nearly 1 million job openings rn which is huge for the size of our economy. Businesses complain they can't find labor

 

Yeah a few ppl may be "lazy" and collect welfare and I really look down on those people but come on. That is no where near the majority. The percentage of ppl who do not work and collect welfare out of pure laziness is too small to make it sound like that's the real issue.

 

In fact I don't think I personally ever met one. I've known people on disability due to major health issues, but that's different
