Really putting a big blame on the streaming era/ labels/ management here. Because of streaming, shorter songs means more streams means more money, even though not much, but that’s another conversation. With TikTok, it’s worse because the labels are trying to force viral hits. Taking full parts of a song out entirely for every song (usually a second verse or bridge), it’s all because of money and trying to force a viral hit. Honestly, other labels and management for other artists are probably pissy at this moment at BM being as viral globally as it is. Another “older” song that wasn’t a forced hit, is a global sensation. I don’t think the music industry or listeners were/ are quite prepared for how streaming essentially would affect the creation/ releasing of music. Even back when TikTok was musical.ly, it was pumping out some semi viral hits (I remember that’s when I first heard of artists like posty, The Weeknd, & twenty one pilots. This was 2015/2016). But yeah these two things plus management and labels forcing short form content. Sometimes artists want to release short form music, and that’s okay, but it sucks when that’s all you’re releasing because you’re forced to in any way

definitely had this feeling, 2022 may have been one of the worst years in music (barring releases from Weeknd, Beyonce and Taylor). 2020 and 2021 in comparison were way better (esp 2020 both in terms of albums with Chromatica, After Hours, Folklore and FN and a range of genuinely good singles like Blinding Lights, Rain On Me, Dua's singles, Watermelon sugar, Billie's Everything I Wanted, Say So etc).

Ugh yes I feel you! The only pop person I love is literally Gaga, everything else I listen to is underground / indie / alternative music
