I'm Latin American, from Mexico to Chile we all always make fun of Argentinians for thinking being the whitest country is a good thing. Even if Lat-Am is racist in general, Argentina has always been messier in this regard, which is incredible when Dominicans exist.

I play with several of them, calling people negro is so common (in LatAm is not an insult UNLESS you use it as one), is like part of their everyday lingo. The recession calmed a little their egos but wining this award is not doing them any good.

On the positive side, abortion is legal, gay marriage is legal, and most of them are fighting for women's equal rights much better than the rest of the continent.

english is not my native language >.<

Nobody is talking about the natives. I’m talking about the racist white latinos who think they are better then everyone else in LatAm just because their ancestors were European.

and that's why i talked about mixed people (notice the word heritage in there) while there are white latinos, the truth is that most of us are actually mixed in some way. So your comment was ignorant, and at the same time perpetuates an stereotype and erases people.

In context, your comment meant that everyone on those videos were white, when that is statistically wrong.

How does one copy racism? Literally every nation on this planet is racist towards someone else. Racism has always existed and will continue to exist.

While it's true that there was an intent to erase afro and native populations in the 1850s, thta changed after slavery was abolished and unlike a lot of countries, the lack of race based segregation meant that mixing happened a lot. But you're not ready for that discussion

Not you telling me I'm not ready for that convo, plzzz. Although inter-racial mixing did happen, plenty Afro-Argentinians, of all shades, but mainly the ones with darker complexions complained about the racist treatment they went through growing up. White civilians and politicians alike don't want to acknowledge Afro-Argentinians as fully fledged citizens. Isn't it your president, Alberto Fernández, who said: "Mexicans emerged from Indigenous people, Brazilians emerged from the jungle, but we Argentines arrived on boats. On boats from Europe"? How about the millions of enslaved Africans huh. Seems like there's a race problem in your country.

yeah, and they came for Malvinas, they had it coming. You don't go for a war that happened less than 40 years agot to mock people.

Right, Argentina's first weapon against criticism is... racism. How fitting. Calling Mexicans monkeys and hanging the figure of a black man from a noose, really? Just enjoy your win and go back to fixing your country's many problems, Lucas.

please point me to that pic, I haven't seen it.

Also, it was not criticism they literally sang " en las Malvinas se habla inglés", that's not criticism, that's laughing at people who fell in the war and at territories lost to a dominating power (something Mexicans should understand, btw).

the critcism towards the president is completely valid, and it was borught up by citizens to the INADI (anti discrimination institute) , unfortunately given that it's run by the same party, nothing came from it. He was heavily criticized in Argentine media and, fortunately, his image has never recovered and is only worsening.

There is a problem with racism, no one can deny that. Every nation that had a history with slavery has a present with racism. That being said, most of the content created outside of Argentina in the topic lacks any nuance or understandment of our culture, history and present. The main problem is invisibilization, and this kind of discourse only helps to invisibilize Afro-Argentine activism even more.

Miriam Gomes (Afro Argentine activist) here explains it better (the interview is in Spanish):

notice how most of the points people use as reasons to say there are no Afro Argentines are one she says were used to invisibilize them in the first place ?

The spread of misinformation since that Washington Post piece has only hurt the community and their activism.
