Yes, I can agree that he should have stepped in and told them to cool off. My point was while the fan behavior is atrocious, I hesitate to smear the entire team as I haven't heard of them directly doing something racist & the singling out of Mbappe might be due to personal reasons. Again, though, it's petty and uncalled for.

While I agree that not all argentinians should be blamed for this. The team definitely bears full responsibility. I happen to have watched their game against the Netherlands and what transpired afterwards. They are really a toxic group of players. They received 10 yellow cards (Messi included :billie:) in a single match, including one for shooting a ball directly at the dutch bench. This is not the first time they engage in this behavior.

The Argentinian TEAM (not the fans) being snarky with Kylian (with the exception of a few, like Messi) could very well be due to him criticizing Lt Am football

Idk why folks say he "criticized Lt Am football" when all he said was that Brazil and Argentina teams were not having the same competition than European countries teams that have to fight a bigger number of tough teams which isn't false. The dude never provokes/ comes for anyone in his interviews so idk why folks presented his comment as an open attack.

and the longstanding rumors that he's been straight up awful to many Lt Am and Brazilian players (including Neymar, who is Black).

If we trust rumors they nearly all have been awful... Seriously players have more gossips than popstars lol.

And these were never proven to be even slightly true.

Fair enough. I will say he's always seemed very sweet & level headed, excluding the rumors (which, as you pointed out, tend to surround everyone), and while I thought the Lt Am football comment was kind of...weird and unnecessary...it was pretty mild.

I think I was just trying to explain why the players-not the fans (who are behaving grossly)-might single him out in particular. And yes, racism could absolutely be a part, but my point was there have been plenty of Black players from various teams over the years that they haven't singled out so for the players to seem to dislike him specifically....there might be a personal reason (and the personal reason might be unfair!).

Again, though, not excusing the behavior of some racist, awful fans.

Yeah that was petty asf. Di Maria and the Dutch coach have long standing beef, but they didn't need to drag the other players into it that were totally innocent of that drama lol. I imagine the rest of the Dutch players were confused and like 'Why are you bothering us?'

Messi, as the father figure type of them all, should have told them to chill.

Not surprising after they were calling Mexicans “mexichangos”(meximonkeys). There’s a reason why America Latina Menos Argentina has become a thing. They think themselves European.

I'm inclined to say this isn't an argentinian issue. It is a white cis straight male issue and I hope karma kicks their ass.

It is so terrible the way you Americans/Europeans are so blinded by your geoplanetary privileges that you are absolutely unable to see how, in your accusations of racism to peripheral countries like Argentina, you exercise the racism you claim to question. I find it appalling that we naturalize that we are having this discussion in YOUR language, adjusting to YOUR (limited) grammatical categories and referring to you as AMERICANS (when America is a whole continent and not a single country). When will we see the opposite situation? When will you be in a position to engage in a discussion with us UNDER OUR TERMS? When will we do it in, for example, the forum of an Argentinean or Latin American artist (do you know they exist? Can you name one?). Stop trying to invert the narratives: you, people from the United States and Europe, were, are and will be the center of global power. Your greedy, chauvinist and racist decisions have impoverished our peoples, have plundered our territories, have murdered our people, have plundered our resources, have ORGANIZED AND FINANCED the military dictatorships that devastated our continent (and that in Argentina have left 30,000 people DISAPPEARED, not counting those murdered, and hundreds of stolen babies -now adults- who do not know their identity and are still being searched for). I can go on and on, AND I WILL, but I will not allow you to try to play the victims' game when the world is a terrible and unjust place BECAUSE OF YOU.

As I understand that you US people are allergic to books, I leave you an explanatory twitter thread, well synthesized as you like it (ultra-processed, quick and ready to consume).

Some of you are getting borderline racist/xenophobic. Target the players, not the people of the country.

Can't you just accept the fact that they were being racist and that it has nothing to do with the rest of Argentina not supporting this behavior. Just because they are champions, you can't be this delusional to accept the fact that they weren't the nicest to play against. ****, do I care about the world championships, it's the fact that the way they celebrate is not a way to do it. Stop using history and thinking that we target the whole country. It's this team's behavior throughout the whole championship which has been toxic.

Christ, you guys go overboard just because the players are being criticised for their behavior. None of this behavior is to be talked right and should be defended.

So stop your egoïstic way of thinking that as if we are all bad and accept the fact that this behavior ain't good at all.
