Always a group dancing, crazy lighting, shaky camera etc. And a lot of company follow the same trend as well... like around 2017 2018, there is always plants, glass box in lots of mv comes out around the time But this happens everywhere and with everything. There are always trends in music, music videos, fashion, etc and most artists follow them. It’s not just kpop, the west is the same. Look at all the female rappers for example, they are all literally the same looking, make the same kind of music, the same topics, the same outfits, the same hair and makeup, the same music videos. And there’s also some variety, not all of them look like this, that’s the whole point why I said I feel like it’s the best of them all. As for groups dancing... well... that’s what kpop is...? Offering both a visual & auditory experience in every aspect is what kpop is about. Singing, dancing, rapping, flashy outfits, flashy music videos, storylines... that’s what the ‘genre’ is, that’s the experience. I personally love it, I wish I saw this level of interest in the west as well. 3 hours ago, NicoB said: Wrong. This is the best MV: It’s a gorgeous music video, I saw it yesterday and was gagged, however I stand by my statement.

It just doesn't really do it for me. Personally I see a LOT more visual and conceptual variety outside of K-pop, there's also more variety in "genres" that's true, but personally I don't see that sense of identity and individuality in most (there are exceptions, of course) K-pop groups/artists. But it’s okay if others don’t.

But that's my point too, people should be able to get a grasp of your identity as an artist from first exposure.

It’s impossible to have this opinion if you did. Maybe you’re too stuck in format that kpop is and didn’t really pay attention to the music. If so, that would be a very shallow interpretation. Just to give you a few examples from this year: Just 3 releases from this year. I specifically chose them from the same company to see the difference between them. They are not the same thing, from music to music videos, I’m sorry. And if you can’t see the difference then maybe you are indeed stuck on the surface level of what kpop is and aren’t really looking at the artistry. monstertoronto 8,880
I think all k-pop videos have stellar production and choreo. I don’t think this one is even close to the best k-pop video I’ve seen this year. It’s pretty repetitive and basic visuals wise. The new Blackpink video blows this out of the water imo. There are some differences, sure... but to me, they seem minimal. The essence of those 3 videos are still a group of aesthetically pleasing 20 somethings doing really good choreo in some really good locations with great production value... nothing in those videos that I haven't seen in other k-pop videos before. If that's your choice of videos to prove my point wrong, it's not working for me (which, by the way, you don't have to change my opinion nor do I intend to change yours, musical preferences are completely subjective) compare that to these 3 recent releases, all within the pop genre: Tell me ANY point those 3 have in common. That's my point, I prefer individuality. In these three, even if I never heard or seen the artist before, I can already get who they're, or at least, their aesthetic values. Again, not criticizing K-Pop in itself or your taste, like any other music genre, it's completely valid. Again, not criticizing K-Pop in itself or your taste, like any other music genre, it's completely valid. Just sharing thoughts and preferences First of all, no worries, I am not offended, I don’t take something as silly as this personally, it’s just a conversation. Second, as I said initially, you are picking on the format that kpop is, not the artistry itself. ‘The essence of those 3 videos are still a group of aesthetically pleasing 20 somethings doing really good choreo in some really good locations’ that’s not the essence of those videos, that’s the ‘genre’, that’s the format it follows as all genres out there follow one generally to BE considered that genre ( now in the case of kpop, it goes beyond the music, it’s also about the visual presentation, including dancing and so on ). If I go by your logic, I could say the same thing about the first 2 videos for example - ‘2 women not doing choreo in aesthetically pleasing locations’, well yeah, they are soloists and they don’t dance and are on location because duh, you need a place to film your video in. That says nothing about the art itself, just the overall idea behind the way the projects are put together. That’s not the essence of those videos either. It’s the storyline, themes explored and message that is the essence. The songs I showed you sounded nothing alike, they all explored different sounds, the music videos were nothing alike in terms of themes and storylines, the only thing in common was having dance scenes, a common thing in every kpop video because that’s what kpop is also about. You are picking on the foundational things that make kpop and describe the genre but are overseeing everything else, aka the artistry itself, and that is a matter of personal perception because you can’t bring yourself to see further than the base layer, aka the label ‘kpop’. And that’s okay, not everybody has to get it or even like it, I just don’t like people discrediting it or writing it off as not being art just because of the pristine package and format when it is. I also enjoy numerous western acts, kpop is not the only thing I like. From mainstream to less mainstream acts, I have always been open to everything. But what I love about kpop is this insane glamorization of everything, the discipline, the attention to detail, the hard work, the talent backed up by skill, something a lot of western acts miss nowadays, the overall investment into creating a product that can leave you in awe. Maybe it’s the perfectionist in me that is always attracted to what looks perfectly glazed like a donut. That’s an art-form too. + you picked 3 acts from 3 different genres, they are individual because they don’t make the same kind of music either. I picked from one genre, that is the point I think you are missing maybe.
