Meijer Battles Trump-Backed Foe After Voting to Impeach

UPDATE 12:17am: Meijer has lost some ground to Gibbs as this race increasingly looks like it will come down to mail-in/absentee and potentially provisional ballots. Arizona law does not provide for candidate-initiated recounts, and the margin as it stands is not nearly close enough to trigger an automatic recount.

In Michigan's 3rd District, incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer (R) is facing a stiff challenge from his right, and is locked in a tight battle for his party's nomination with under 15% of the expected vote in. John Gibbs, a former employee in the Trump Administration, has the backing of the former president as he seeks to unseat Meijer, a freshman who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. 

Meijer, who benefits from the power of incumbency as well as built-in name recognition as an heir to the Meijer grocery store chain popular in the Midwest, has posted strong fundraising numbers, pulling in just under $600,000 in the final stretch of the primary race. Gibbs raised roughly half that in the same timeframe. 

The race is currently in a dead heat, with just 2 points separating leader Gibbs from Meijer.
