The two that CHANGED it for me are definitely Britney Spears and Gaga. If we go back at time we can clearly see how things changed in pop music and culture in general drastically after the influences of both of them in all kinds os aspects from the music itself to the idea about what a popstar is and how it could affect other people lives. I’ll agree about Gaga, though she is 100% derivative of Elton John, Madonna, Grace Jones, Annie Lenox, Cyndi Lauper and Freddie Mercury. There’s an understanding about humanity she has, though, that draws people in, and she’s able to connect in a way that few have in recent memory. Like Dolly Parton in a way. She’s also the first true “multi-threat” artist to come along since perhaps Cher, Streisand and maybe Reba McEntire. Britney, though, while certainly fun and entertaining, was just another dancing female pop star that middle America white highschool girls identified with or wanted to be like, and therefore the gays as well. There was nothing she really offered other than having mega pop producers creating her music and ushering back in bubblegum pop after the grunge era. Not exactly ground breaking in any way, and perhaps, dare I say it, reductive.
