I want to make that as clear as possible before people start creating a straw man of my argument. He isn’t totally wrong in saying that NATO played a part in escalating and raising tensions. For those who care: This video was made SIX YEARS ago but is very relevant in todays crisis. You could easily believe this lecture was made yesterday. - Imagine China making military alliances with Canada and Mexico, moving military forces into these countries and influencing them politically and economically. How would the U.S feel? They would enact the Monroe Doctrine the same way they did in the Cold War. Why would we believe Russia would feel differently about NATO/EU expanding their Military/Economic influence into their backyard? Then the US should accept Mexico and Canada's souverign decisions to join Russia or China's sphere of influence. You don't understand how damaging is this binarity rethoric. Is not Russia vs US, is Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Romania, Moldova, Czech Republic and Slovakia vs Russia. These are the countries with valid security concerns next to a historical bully with nukes. Ukraine was historically a buffer, they no longer want to be one. The argument to historical precedent doesn't work when Ukraine only became independent 30 years ago, on the same logic Ukraine should go default back to Russian rule and Alaska and Fort Ross in California should be granted back to Russia, LATAM to Spain and Kaliningrad and western Poland to Germany. Russia's only concern is that it no longer can assert its influence in the ex-Soviet space, is not valid and should not be given the benefit of the doubt. You talk aboout Monroe doctrine, Russia has the same: is called Eurasianism/ Primakov doctrine and is the idea that the whole of Eurasia, Middle East, Indian Ocean, and indirectly Africa etc belong to them. This is why they interfer in Syria, Lybia, Central African Republic, Mozambique. What you call balance of power is the undermining of the independence of the countries at Russia's pheriphery, which woke ideals should be 100% against, not go on great lenght to make an apology about. Im not doing anything, it's my view on the matter, if u don't like it, u don't like it. If you are religious, be religious talk about it, im never offended, if im not religious and i don't like the Pope, i got the right to talk about it too.
