RAMROD 117,269
Ukraine on Monday asked to be admitted to the European Union immediately in a bid to shore up security as Ukrainian forces fight Russian troops for the fifth day and leaders begin possible peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a televised address that Ukraine has a right to join the EU as its 28th member, and suggested a "special procedure" to get the admission done. "We appeal to the European Union to immediately admit Ukraine as a member under a new special procedure," he said in his address, according to Newsweek. "I'm convinced Ukraine has earned the right and that this is possible." Zelensky said late on Sunday that the next 24 hours would be a critical period for Ukrainian forces and civilians who are attempting to repel Russian troops. He made the remarks in a discussion with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In an interview with Euronews, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU wants Ukraine to join, but offered no timetable for when that could happen. She called Ukraine "one of us and we want them in the European Union." Von der Leyen said as for Ukraine joining the European Union, the body will respect its established process, such as integrating the Ukrainian market into the single market. https://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2022/02/28/ukraine-join-european-union-russia-peace-talks/7571646048729/ (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ ᶠʳᵒⁿᵗ ᵗᵒʷᵃʳᵈ ᵉⁿᵉᵐʸ (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡

There is nothing in the EU treaties that permits instant membership. The ascesion process is very specific and very clear.

The formal joining process is long, well specified in the EU treaties, and takes years to work through. Usually countries will try and meet a lot of the criteria before starting the formal process. Ukraine today has started the formal process and is hoping they will be allowed fast-track membership where they can waive a lot of the joining criteria. That is unlikely to pass due to the treaties- membership is a long way off but the journey begins today

Luc 4,776
I'm a bit scared he's setting his population up for disappointment. EU accession for Ukraine is infeasible before 2025 or even 2030, and could take as long as 2040 if the next president is less reformist. Ukraine is a really poor country with lots of structural problems that are difficult to tackle. Zelenskiy made some steps and Ukraine was on the right path, but before Ukraine fixes most of its oligarch and corruption problems they shouldn't be allowed to join. Besides, the main value of EU membership lies precisely in that difficult accession process, where countries are forced to make their economy much healthier and democracy more enduring. And the EU should itself reform before this happens, because I don't want another Poland/Hungary story.
Guest
And what else? Join NATO and then what, have nuclear power, threaten Putin with it, ask european countries to bring their troops to Russia? Just do it, escalate it, while we all die
