1989’s Like a Prayer, and its lead single and video in particular, revolutionised pop music forever. That’s all there is to say. For this final writeup, I wanted so much to write about a minefield of fiery crosses, and vinyl albums that smelt of incense, and the 1980s AIDS crisis, and the pioneering integration of religion into pop music, and a failing movie career, and a collapsing abusive marriage, and Pepsi and the Vatican, patchouli and rosaries, crying statues, the sheer ****ing NERVE of this song, and one of the best music videos ever made.

But you know what? It speaks for itself. Like A Prayer is not just Madonna’s best L-song: it’s the crowning glory of her entire discography, and indubitably one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. Here is your winner:

@sillynate I’ll be honest I listened to the Immaculate Collection version because I despise the album version. That remix is Godly.

@LDGA Truly a song that has aged really well, I really like to compare this song to the new projects of Madonna, and the evolution she has had as an artist is amazing.

Yaaaas.  I can sleep well tonight lol.  But .. can we just acknowledge the most effortless (lyrics written by Madge in a few hours on a single day) double-entendres (down on my knees .. take you there .. like a prayer) in pop music history?  My favorite Madonna song, and favorite song of all time did that.
