In another place, at a different time You can be my lucky star 1 GIVE ME ALL YOUR LUVIN' — average 11.00 If you were wondering why I spoilt a perfectly good preshow playlist with this musical dunghill, this is why. I’m gonna pass you over to what @danbekim wrote in the box where I asked for your 11: it doesn’t really count but give me all your Luvin’ is overhated, so I want to give that 11 to ha <3 So here we are. In a rate that saw Lucky Star beat Living for Love and Like A Virgin land outside the top 5, it feels fitting that this try-hard cringefest, which doesn’t even begin with an L, is your favourite Madonna L-song. Interestingly, Give Me All Your Luvin’ (roughly abbreviated to GAYLUV) isn’t actually even a song, it’s technically just three and a half minutes of noise. Some say it makes dogs spontaneously cry. But, given that @danbekim was the only person who thought to rate this track, that means 100% of the people who rated GAYLUV gave it an 11 (and he's not even here to celebrate!) You just can’t argue with the numbers.

Cruelty 6,172
But for real, your runner-up is... 2 LIVE TO TELL — average 8.99 The highs: 11 x 6 [@NeonSkeleton @Lucas @No Way Home @nickkoko @EdX @Crescent Bloom]; 10 x 14 [@androiduser @Ronk @Charmz @GaGaLB @proxy @DrewPa @Madame Goo Goo @Duella DeVil @Cupid Boy @monstertoronto @ssslyboy @MonsterOfSpain @sillynate @CyberRaga] The lows: 1 [@Blown Away] Truth or Dare (1991) My baby's got a secret — 'Secret' (1994) I'm Gonna Tell You a Secret (2005) Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005) Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned — 'Live to Tell' (1986) "I have a funny relationship with religion" —Madonna, Harper's Bazaar (2013) Madonna is always a little coy when she’s asked to explain any of her lyrics, but Live to Tell is on a whole other level. Reviewers and fans have speculated that the song is about deceit, mistrust, childhood scars, Madonna’s relationship with her parents. But to truly understand Live to Tell, I think we need to look at how it’s performed. Ignoring the Who’s That Girl Tour performance which had no theme, ‘Live to Tell’ has been played on the 1990 Blond Ambition Tour and the 2006 Confessions Tour. In 1990, she performed on a set designed to resemble a church; in 2006, she sang from a crucifix. In 1990, the Pope urged Christians not to attend Madonna’s Italian shows and the Vatican newspaper deemed the performance ‘sinful and blasphemous’. In 2006, the Russian Orthodox Church called the performance ‘amoral’ and the Rome show was condemned as an act of hostility towards the Roman Catholic Church. In 1990, Madonna stated ‘The tour in no way hurts anybody’s sentiments. It’s for open minds’. In 2006, she said ‘My performance is neither anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous. Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing’. For so long, the unwritten rule was always: you do not mess about with religion. As I think you’ve worked out already from this rate, Madonna does not play by the rules. Madonna was raised Catholic, but a harsh Christian childhood complicated her relationship with religion, especially when she found that “I had questions… and my religion never answered those questions”. Live To Tell, with its religious-themed performances and its investigation of the control of knowledge, seems to be inspired in part by this childhood, and by the fundamental unknowability of so much of religion. Because Live To Tell is about secrets. About stories and information. When to tell. Whether to tell. It’s a song about confession in the secular and religious senses. ‘The truth is never far behind, you kept it hidden well’ applies to people and organisations who control the flow of information — and Live to Tell is about the power of these secrets. Not just little secrets; but the insidious, painful secrets that gnaw away at every fibre of your being. So long as you keep quiet, they are yours and yours only. But that can be a blessing and a curse. And what if we tell our tale and people misunderstand us? Is confession morally right? Should we put our struggles onto other people? ‘Will it grow cold, the secret that I hide? Will I grow old? How will they hear? When will they learn? How will they know?’ Will I ever be able to confess, and will they ever know what this secret meant to me? These questions are hard to answer. The first time I listened to Live To Tell, I was fascinated by those opening synths. The way every chord reverberates around your body. And I’d never heard a song shiver like that. This is a song that wants to feel grand, and enormous, cavernous and sonorous, monolithic and monumental. And it succeeds in every aspect. In fact, it’s almost too big — ‘it will burn inside of me’, ‘I have a tale to tell’, ‘will I live to tell’, this almost pompous presentation feels like a soldier returning from a battlefield, or a political leader in genuine mortal danger. But that’s the point — Live to Tell is about the sheer power of truth. Madonna has ‘a tale to tell’, and if she’s ready, and when she’s ready, she will tell it — and until that moment, it could be the smallest secret in the world, or it could be the key to global harmony. And we will simply never know which. Live To Tell makes our struggles mythic and biblical and gargantuan, and rightly so. Because I am the only person who understands my struggles, and you are the only person who understands yours. So many people have listened to Live To Tell and thought about their own secrets, and how painful they can be to hold. I don’t mean to second-guess anybody, but there are many LGBTQ+ people on this forum, and I’m sure many of us have wrestled with that particular secret, and felt the sense of ‘will I live to tell, or will this secret eat me from the inside out’? This song is difficult to listen to, but it’s a richly rewarding, lyrically profound work of art. For a short while at the start of voting, Live to Tell was in the lead. But in the end, what else could have been your winner? Normally I’d share a video or a funny gif or something at this point, but instead I’m going to implore you to read this brilliant piece that Madonna wrote in 2013. It’s not explicitly about Live To Tell, but I think it’s impossible that the secrets she reveals here weren’t in her mind when she wrote the song. I know you’ve read a lot today, but if you have 10 minutes spare, please read this; if you don’t, bookmark it for later: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/news/a1095/madonna-interview-1113/ Okay, one video then. Because, make no mistake: a crucified Madonna performing Live To Tell whilst the 12 million African children orphaned by AIDS were tallied up behind her, remains the boldest artistic move ever made by a popstar. Without question. Here it is: Comments Spoiler @Madame Goo Goo Her best ballad @Duella DeVil Her best ballad @Crescent Bloom Arguably Madonna’s best ballad (alongside Frozen). This track’s production is INSANE. It’s haunting. it’s nostalgic. it’s weirdly sensual. it’s mildly experimental, but still so f**cking 80s. I love the melody. I love Madonna’s (rare) deep vocals. I love the lyrical perspective. I love everything about this track. @monstertoronto Maybe her most perfect ballad? Stunning song. @nickkoko One of my favourite 80s songs; the production is so clear and the vocal sound great, especially the backing vocals on the bridge. @sillynate This one blew me away. Another one I’ve hardly listened to @whoresup I think it’s a very underrated ballad. She sings with lots of emotion and I like the production. It was a risky single choice to lead the album tho. @CyberRaga I actually can’t listen to this song anymore as it reminds me of a very, very dark place of my life. Fun fact: this is actually my first tattoo that I got. @Lucas Top 3 best Madonna songs - Absolute masterpiece and the fact that this ballad was a lead single after being known for her dance hits @No Way Home Her second best ballad (behind only Oh Father) this song is absolutely stunning from start to finish. One of her best singles, one of her best songs, and the perfect way for her to announce the era of the mature and refined Madonna that we’ve all grown to adore. @Blown Away One of my least favorite Madonna songs ever. I don’t like the slow, tedious instrumental that goes nowhere, as well as the weak melody. But it’s the weak and out of tune vocals that I truly can’t stand. To quote Whitney Houston: The girl sings off-key on the record. @Reject False Icons I know it’s a classic but I never liked it, kind of monotone and slow, but I love the lyrics @Frank Potion Iconic for a reason @danbekim it’s okay @LDGA The song has aged pretty bad but still holds to this day

That’s all there is to say. For this final writeup, I wanted so much to write about a minefield of fiery crosses, and vinyl albums that smelt of incense, and the 1980s AIDS crisis, and the pioneering integration of religion into pop music, and a failing movie career, and a collapsing abusive marriage, and Pepsi and the Vatican, patchouli and rosaries, crying statues, the sheer ****ing NERVE of this song, and one of the best music videos ever made. But you know what? It speaks for itself. Like A Prayer is not just Madonna’s best L-song: it’s the crowning glory of her entire discography, and indubitably one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. Here is your winner: Comments Spoiler @whoresup Where do you even begin! An instantly recognisable track as so as you hear the opening choir you know the song. I love the melody and the vocals so much. A classic! @monstertoronto Perhaps THE classic Madonna song of all time. @BBhomemaker C’mon this song is 30+years old and still give me goosebumps each times, the energy, the dramatic effect, the song itself take you to a theater… she did that @Reject False Icons Another classic @Frank Potion I mean… this song is deservedly one of her biggest songs. A true CLASSIC. Quintessential Madonna. @Blown Away A classic. Period. @nickkoko Another timeless classic. @danbekim classic, that cursed eurovision performance ruined it for me @sillynate I’ll be honest I listened to the Immaculate Collection version because I despise the album version. That remix is Godly. @LDGA Truly a song that has aged really well, I really like to compare this song to the new projects of Madonna, and the evolution she has had as an artist is amazing. @CyberRaga This song just screams classic. 7 for the original (10 points for the 12’ Dance Remix.) @Crescent Bloom The final choruses + those background vocals… wheeewwww it’s legendary. @Duella DeVil Legendary
