Far right extremists have gotten the leftist journalist and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker (also known as HasanAbi on YouTube and Twitch) streamed banned. The controversy unfolded a few days ago, when Hasan complained on his stream about several of his chat moderators being banned from the platform, because they had referrred to a racist, Trump supporting contestant on the show MasterChef as a "cracker", which Twitch classified as a "racial slur".

Hasan went on record of his stream to state that "cracker" is not a slur, but a mere pejorative, and not compareable to actual racial slurs like the n-word, as the etymology and origin of the word are wildly different. His statements went viral on the Reddit forum "LiveStreamFails", which was brigaded by far right extremists accusing Piker for "reverse racism" and being "bigoted towards the whites", with multiple clips that were clipped out of context, receiving over 10k+ upvotes and thousands of comments.

The LiveStreamFails forum has been criticized by Piker for allowing far-right communities to pile up on him, despite the first rule of the community being that "politics should be kept out of the forum", removing comments that defended him and allowing threads about his Twitter account being kept up, despite the forum being for video content only.

Hasan's VODs of his last few days have not been available for on-demand streaming due to the organized mass reporting by right-wing trolls and Hasan's account has been banned from streaming on the platform until further review from the Twitch staff.

I love watching him on H3H3 every Sunday since he is one of those rare people in the US who don't think socialism is communism.

Also, crack me like the cracker I am, zaddy. :lolly:

Social media policing of what's considered "hate speech" has become a joke. I reported numerous accounts for anti-LGBT and racist rhetoric and nothing happens. Yet, I called someone a "redneck boomer" and got a 30 day ban :neyde:

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

I can relate. Social media is truly the toilet of the internet.

I have been following this discourse for the past few days and still don't understand how and who "cracker" marginalizes, oppresses and hurts (the way other slurs do so). If there's anyone on this site that feels offended by it I would really like to hear them explain why.

And yet I reported a comment filled with derogatory comments towards Asians on Facebook and FB told me they decided it was ok.

"extremists" ... the bar seems very low if thats the case. If Twitch doesn't want that word used on their platform then they are more than welcome to punish people for using it, apparently 2 of his mods already got banned for using that word to.

Twitch has notoriously been very touchy on what is allowed to be said on their platform anyway. Using the term "blind playthrough" was banned from the site when all it really means is to play a game with no previous experience, going into the game blind so to speak.

Hasan knows full well what he's signed up to streaming on Twitch, especially with the controversial nature of his streams.

In reality slurs don't oppress or marginalize anyone because in the end they are just words and they have no power to do anything like that. Some people consider them offensive though but many things can be offensive so it's not a big problem. In the other hand, if racial slurs are unacceptable in one case then they should be unacceptable in every other case too.

He shouldn't have been banned for that but as a daily viewer, I feel like in the past couple of weeks he's gotten so toxic on stream. Like, he's just been such a d*ck a lot of the time lately and that's largely because of him getting sh*t on constantly on livestreamfails for stupid stuff like the cracker thing. I think if he hadn't been banned for the cracker discourse, he was still on his way to getting banned.

Also, for those that don't know, this is more of a suspension than a ban. He's basically suspended for 7 days.
