Texas anti-mask 'Freedom Rally' organizer fighting for his life with COVID

A Texas man who helped organize protests against pandemic restrictions is fighting for his life after being hospitalized for nearly a month with COVID-19, the San Angelo Standard-Times reported.

His wife, Jessica Wallace, wrote Wednesday on Facebook that she had a “heartbreaking update” about her husband, Caleb.

“He’s not doing good. It’s not looking in our favor,” she said. “His lungs are stiff due to the fibrosis. They called and said they’ve run out of options for him and asked if I would consent to a do not resuscitate. And it would be up to us when to stop treatments.”

“My heart just can’t. I can’t imagine my life without him.”

In July 2020, Caleb Wallace reportedly helped organize a “freedom rally” that billed itself as a protest against the “government being in control of our lives.” He also founded the San Angelo Freedom Defenders, which hosted a separate rally last year to “end COVID tyranny.”

He wrote a letter in April to the San Angelo Independent School District that was published by a local news outlet. In it, he demanded that the school district “rescind ALL COVID-related policies immediately” and falsely claimed that wearing masks had harmful effects on children and that there was “little evidence that masks worked for anyone.”

He signed the letter as state coordinator of the West Texas Minutemen, a right-wing militia group that has disseminated extensive anti-vaccine misinformation on Facebook. 

When he first felt symptoms on July 26, his wife told the Standard-Times, he refused to get tested or seek medical care. He instead began treating himself with a cocktail of Vitamin C, zinc, aspirin and ivermectin, an anti-parasitic drug that has been falsely promoted as an effective treatment for COVID-19 by conservative media. He was taken to the hospital on July 30.

Jessica Wallace told the Standard-Times that she was “less conservative” than her husband and personally wears a mask.

“Caleb would tell me, ‘You know masks aren’t going to save you,’ but he understood I wanted to wear them,” she said. “It gives me comfort to know that maybe, just maybe, I’m either protecting someone or avoiding it myself.”

I can’t believe people actually think wearing masks is a political issue. You’re LITERALLY preventing yourself from contracting a deadly virus and spreading it... I understand being skeptical about a vaccine (I was too, at first, just based on uncertainty of its safety/long-term affects, but I’m fully vaccinated now), but refusing to wear a mask? Okay then.

I, in a way, have compassion for these people, because they really believe they are right and they downplay this virus because they read false information on facebook and the internet and spread it, based on what they put together. They don't know any better and probably have never learned to inform themselves properly. (And they also cannot interpret statistics properly)

So I'm not going to be like "haha, your own fault" because if they did survive, most of them would probably go: "I'm sorry, I was wrong, everyone should get vaccinated. I underestimated this", BUT most of them who get hospitalized and get seriously ill will not be able to tell the tale, sadly.

And the ones who do not get seriously ill (or just a lil bit) will just say "See, I had it and it wasn't that bad" and they'll continue with spreading false information.

I would feel the same way. It's such a waste of a life when these people catch covid and potentially die from it because they didn't believe in it. It's sad.

But my pity well is all tapped out because they're not just killing themselves. They're infecting other people and taking up hospital beds from people who need them.

My only sympathies go out to the people who, for some reason, care about these nut jobs (family, friends, whatever). Hopefully they can do better.
