However, in what could be the first form of asexual reproduction in smoothhound sharks, a ‘miracle’ baby was born in a tank where only two female sharks lived for the past decade. There’s no record of the presence of any male in the tank for over 10 years now and this miracle baby birth has thrown up a new scientific puzzle to decode. The baby shark (mustelus mustelus) born in Cala Gonone Aquarium, in Sardinia, Italy. Named “Ispera” by the team, the newborn female shark is believed to be the result of parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction in which a female egg can develop into an embryo without being fertilized by a sperm. To unravel the mystery, two DNA samples from the females were sent to a specialized laboratory. In the end, all viruses, microbes etc reproduce asexually, by creating copies of themselves. But the more complex the life form is, the more surprising is to hear of one parent offsprings.
