Model Tess Holliday has announced that she is receiving treatment for an eating disorder.

“I’m anorexic and in recovery. I’m not ashamed to say it out loud anymore,” Holliday, 35, wrote on Twitter over the weekend. “I’m the result of a culture that celebrates thinness and equates that to worth, but I get to write my own narrative now. I’m finally able to care for a body that I’ve punished my entire life and I am finally free.”

In an Instagram post on Saturday, thebody-positivity activist revealed that she had been receiving well-meaning but triggering messages like, “You’re looking healthy lately.”

“Don’t. Comment. On. My. Weight. Or. Perceived. Health. Keep. It. To. Yourself. Thanks,” Holliday wrote. “Yes, I’ve lost weight — I’m healing from an eating disorder & feeding my body regularly for the first time in my entire life.”

“When you equate weight loss with ‘health’ & place value & worth on someone’s size, you are basically saying that we are more valuable now because we are smaller & perpetuating diet culture… & that’s corny as hell,” Holliday explained. “NOT here for it.”

“If you can’t tell someone they look nice without making it about their size, then baby, please don’t say nuthin at all,” she concluded.

I personally don’t know this woman or her situation, but I think this is fascinating because when I was anorexic but not yet an unhealthy weight people would tell me I didn’t have an eating disorder, even though I had lost an absurd amount of weight in a very short amount of time by starving myself. Anorexia is a behavior, not a body type. Atypical anorexia is real.

Well, I think she expressed herself wrong, she is probably bullimic, not anorexic. To be anorexic your weight must threat your life (source I've been both and discussed it with my psychiatrist and psychologist).

I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

true, but even in atypical anorexia symptoms like an irrational fear of gaining weight or getting fat and weight loss in a very short amount of time are still present. Looking at Tess's tiktok and instagram content she NEVER showed any of those symptoms, in fact she has shown the opposite. I hope she's okay and not taking anorexia lightly by using this deadly disorder as a very weird publicity stunt

There is this condition named Anorexia depression that a lot of people that don’t necessarily have physical anorexia have. It plays with your mind and it is linked to body dismorphia. It basically tells you you look too overweight even if you don’t and it is extremely hard to live with it for some people. Maybe that’s what she meant.

I'm unaware of this. Can anybody be nice and explain to me what this means? I personally believed (that's why I need someone with a better understanding on this topic) that anorexia was associated with extreme thin bodies.

I'm sending her love in her recovery journey.

Just a friendly reminder that no one can or should assume anything about someone else's health based on their weight or appearance. Period. That goes for assuming fat people are unhealthy, that goes for assuming skinny people are healthy, that goes for questioning someone's diagnosis they have chosen to make public because you don't think they look how they "should" to fit that diagnosis.

morbidly obese people are not healthy and we should stop perpetuating such a harmful narrative.

As an overweight woman, thank you! I have PCOS so, it is VERY hard to lose weight.
