Chilling Economic Reality of Indy Scotland Exposed in New Report

NICOLA STURGEON has been issued a devastating economic warning ahead of her pursuit to break up the UK by holding an independence referendum.

In a concerning report on Scotland's economic future, the Institue for Government (IFG) claimed the current deficit, combined with maintaining the level of public spending would not be sustainable if the country left the UK. The report also claimed the current deficit would increase rapidly and may provide lasting damage to public finances in the long-term. Gemma Tetlow, author of the report and chief economist at the IFG, claimed Scotland must address the reality of the fiscal imbalances which would occur after independence.

In order to cushion the blow of independence in combination with huge impact of the pandemic, the think-tank claimed the Scottish Government will need to increase taxes and cut back public spending.

In a blow to Ms Sturgeon's independence hopes, the report predicts the deficit of 7.7 in 2018/19 is likely to rise significantly due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Indeed, the IFG claims the larger the deficit becomes, the harder the case for independence is.

The report said: "There are many reasons why the people of Scotland or Wales might want to seek independence from the UK, or why the people of Northern Ireland might want to be part of a united Ireland.

"However, one cost of doing so would be that they would no longer be able to benefit from the redistribution of resources that currently takes place across the UK.

"The larger the deficit that they have is, the harder the case for independence becomes."

Commenting on the latest report, Pamela Nash, chief executive of Scotland in Union, said: “It’s time for some honesty from Nicola Sturgeon.

“Today’s IfG report is unequivocal; if Scotland leaves the UK we will be left with a huge deficit.

“She needs to be upfront with the people of Scotland and come clean about what public services she would cut in an independent Scotland.

“But if she is being honest with herself, she would acknowledge that we are stronger together as part of the UK, drop her obsession with division, and work to ensure that no community is left behind as we recover from the pandemic.”

Amid the bleak economic picture for Scotland, the Scottish Conservative economy spokesman Maurice Golden warned Ms Sturgeon is willing to do damage to the economy in pursuit of independence.

He added: "Nicola Sturgeon says she will hold another referendum within the first two years of the Scottish Parliament yet blithely admits having done no analysis of what that would mean.

"This respected independent think tank lays bare the chilling economic reality of ripping Scotland out of the UK.

"The Nationalists are willing to inflict untold damage on families and business.

"The SNP would no longer be able to afford policies such as free prescriptions and free tuition as Scotland would face spending cuts and tax rises the likes of which we have never experienced.

"When all focus should be on recovery and rebuilding, this is reckless beyond belief.

"This respected independent think tank lays bare the chilling economic reality of ripping Scotland out of the UK.

"The Nationalists are willing to inflict untold damage on families and business.

"The SNP would no longer be able to afford policies such as free prescriptions and free tuition as Scotland would face spending cuts and tax rises the likes of which we have never experienced.

"When all focus should be on recovery and rebuilding, this is reckless beyond belief.

"Deep down, Sturgeon must know the devastation this would cause but pro-UK voters can stop her by voting Scottish Conservative on the peach-coloured party list ballot paper."

Despite the damning economic forecasts, Ms Sturgeon has insisted independence will lead to more jobs for the country.

However, the SNP has come under fire amid concerns a border could be erected between Scotland and England.

During an interview with the BBC's Andrew Marr, the First Minister admitted a hard border may be needed in order to comply with the EU's regulations if Scotland joined the bloc.

She said: "Of course we want to keep trade flowing across the England-Scotland border, that would be in the interests of Scotland as well and we would work to make sure that happened.

"We will keep trade flowing freely, we will comply with all of the requirements of EU membership."

Under EU regulation, 30 percent of poultry, eggs, milk and fish, as well as all live animal stock would need to be checked when entering the single market.

Scottish Tory leader Douglas claimed any border between Scotland and England would be awful for the country.

The position Scotland will be in upon leaving is about 85% dependant on exit  negotiations with the UK government, so anything in independence forecasts is informed speculation at best and wild speculation at worst. 
 

Pro-independence politicians would be better off saying “we don’t know what it’ll be like but we’ll make the best of it we can” rather than promise the world and worry about delivering with it later
