It’s time to unplug the sanitizing robots and put away the bottles of Clorox that seem to line the entrances to every school, restaurant and supermarket wanting to advertise its safety protocols. While such protocols may be reassuring to an anxious populace, they are not necessary, says a revised guidance issued on Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It is possible for people to be infected through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects (fomites), but the risk is generally considered to be low,” the new CDC guidance says, estimating that the chance of contracting the coronavirus through surface transmission is lower than 1 in 10,000.

The coronavirus is spread almost exclusively by airborne and aerosolized particles, as scientists have known for months. Despite scientists’ growing certitude about how the pathogen is transmitted, many establishments have continued to insist on strict sanitization protocols. In some school districts, for example, classrooms close for full-day “deep cleaning.”

The persistence of such practices has led to the advent of a derisive term — “hygiene theater” — to describe rituals that appear to do little to stop the virus from spreading. It is not clear if the CDC’s new guidance will lower the curtain on those theatrics, given how entrenched some of those practices have become.

As a performance artist, I refuse to let others tell me that I can't express myself through the art of hygiene theater.

So yes, I will continue to disinfect myself and my belongings, in public, for the consumption of others.

Honestly this entire pandemic has been rituals to make appear like ur doing something but never go to the root cause

 

Making ppl wait in long lines to get into store may look good cuz it looks like ur doing something. But ppl end up being more cramed to eachother on the line than they would be if they were all just allowed inside

 

My province just canceled outdoor dining killing already strained restaurants when scientists have repeatedly said transmission risks under those circumstances is low and the real issue were having is industrial settings and warehouses

 

It looks good that ppl would wipe their seat at gyms after use. But ur not gonna get covid19 from ur ass sitting down. Wear the mask properly and if ur gonna wipe anything wipe the handles ppl actually touch if anything. Ppl woukd waste time sanatizing super low risk stuff while simultaneously ignoring high risk behaviour

 

Its all about the looks. Looks like your taking the virus seriously. But half the stuff is just that, the looks. A lot of stuff ppl and establishments and governments are doing dont actually do anything

disinfecting can protect from other forms of viral/bacterial agents, tho, which can be, i think, helpful for your overall health/immune system. who knows what factors of co-morbidity are in play. i’m gonna continue to follow the protocol of “hygiene theater,” even if it’s just “for show” (to alleviate the fear perceived by my brain and/or society).

It literally says that there is still a chance to get infected with Corona by touching unsanitized surfaces yet they still are recommending we end sanitization culture?! It reminds me of when they said "masks are not important" at the start of the outbreak  Like even if it helps 1% people should still do it imo. That said I am also a believer that people need to get dirty at times to develop a bit of resistance to other infections and what not so playing in the park is a good way to get your kids interacting with other kids, sharing a bit of germs and developing resistance to illnesses but sanitizing areas of work, school, places you eat etc...is totally normal and should be encouraged. .

"Everything that we've told you for the past year is wrong". I guess government leaders and legislators have already lined their pockets and their friends pockets at public expense, so the truth can come out now

Continually using things like hand sanitizer is not healthy for your immune system, so you're actually putting yourself at greater risk for illness. The best method is using hot water and soap when at all possible, which of course can't always be done.

Most of us have known this from the start. Sadly, they were able to convince the masses. Fortunately it appears that many are finally waking up to the control we've been under for the last 365 days.

I remember when people insisted on sterilizing their packaged groceries after they brought them home from the store, which always seemed a step too far.

Whats' next? Masks are fake news?
