Ever since I read that part my mind was blown (you don't need to fully understand music theory, because you can actually hear it in Gaga's voice): The melody appears twice per chorus, but over two distinctly different chord progressions (VI-VII-i-III the first time, VI-VII-V-i the second). The first time, “bad” appears as G-natural, leaping down a fourth to “romance.” The second time, “bad” appears as a G-sharp, leaping down a tritone. That G-sharp wants to go upward. It wants to rise to the A, resolving the cadence as a music school freshman would have done. But Gaga goes down, leaving that “bad” leading note hanging. Why? Because she herself is bad. Further accentuating the badness of that “bad”: That interval, the tritone, is historically linked to sexual desire and the devil. Whether or not Lady Gaga is familiar with the specifics of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony is irrelevant; she has scored a textbook-worthy usage of Western music theory’s favorite signifier for EVILDOING. The second "bad" is best sung in this live performance: You can really hear that the note is "hanging". The note feels bad itself. Gaga adds even more pain to it in her tone. GAYHEMikey 8,126
BR would've been perfect if they kept the demo backing vocals NO DUCT TAPE - NO MISSON
Bradley 59,279
How someone can create that at the age of 23 is just beyond me. I'm 23 and I'm nowhere near her level.
mattbri 1,382
I remember when the song came out my father said: "This is the best Gaga song ever. She will never have a better one!"

SevenWonder 4,414
It's her signature song for sure. I love JD, PF, Shallow, and about 20 other hits. But BR is that bish.

But its so overrated. The production sounds messy to me and quite rough... and the song itself is pretty long. Its almost 5 minutes and it lowkey gets boring. Its not as messy as DITD, but the production could have been tweaked a lot more. I much prefer her live versions of Bad Romance, especially that Rainbow Room performance, than the studio version. The studio version is a great song, but not her best song. lots of words for "i lost my sense of taste"

boyerased 2,886
What I love about BR is the whole serendipity aspect. It was the perfect song at the perfect time with the perfect people working on it.
julz 7,417
Bad Romance is like a bugle call in military, but this one is to signal the coming of a pop icon, ready to take over Vote 4 Gaga: https://mtv.com/event/vma/vote
MOT 3,190
I love the album version and the video. They're vibrant, they're fun, the video even ends with a joke. For me they are a feelgood event. But if I had to choose (fortunately I don't) between the album version and the Rainbow Room performance, I would choose the RR. It reeks of decadence, and I'm thinking Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and sleazy nightclubs, and Gaga's voice is perfect. And I've just googled Gaga and Dietrich and I see lots of people have been there before me.

Nano 3,689
Truly Bad Romance is one of the best songs ever!! I was hooked to it when it first came out so many years ago and still bop to it. It never gets old and always sounds incredible Vox did a cool analysis on repetition in pop music spend a significant amount of time dissecting Bad Romance! You chew beef, I wear meat.
