3/4 of all vaccines have gone to people in just 9 countries

So far, 319.56 million vaccine doses have been administered worldwide – almost three times as many as the total number of infections recorded globally, and an unprecedented achievement considering the virus only first emerged about 15 months ago.

Yet, two statistics highlight the enormous inequality in the way the global rollout has taken place.

One: Three-quarters of all vaccines have gone to people in just 9 countries

Two: More than 100 countries are yet to administer a single vaccine

The result? While experts agree that the pandemic can only be controlled when the whole world is safe, the vast majority of life-saving jabs are being handed out in a handful of mostly wealthy nations

Is there a chance that this could be because wealthier countries have the means to disturbute their vaccines to the population quicker? 

Also in the context of the UK, we have the worst death rate per capita so why wouldn't we use the vaccines we have on our own population?

No no I get it, and the selfishness in me is glad that were doing well with the rollout in the UK so I can have my life back regardless of how poorly elsewhere is doing. But we can acknowledge that the fact that 100 countries have had zero vaccines but we will be done vaccinating our entire population by July is pretty disgusting.

The fact is: the wealthier countries, especially in the west were hit hardest. The population in wealthier countries have a higher percentage of people who move around daily for jobs, etc. This causes a much quicker spread, so the countries with wealthier economies, and mobile people had higher spread, higher death rates. In this case, the countries with higher spread and higher death rates due to a mobile population, should receive the vaccine first. In countries that aren’t wealthy, the population is much less mobile, making it much more difficult to spread. Many people don’t leave their towns or villages so it has been difficult for the virus to even penetrate in certain places of less wealthy countries. 
 

Money plays a factor, but not as much as you might think.

That's true, but should we give away our vaccines to other countries at the cost of lives in our own country?

Not saying it has to be that dire but effectively isn't it that choice? spread the limited vaccine resources worldwide and hope for the best?

Either way you do it, people won't be happy.

The vaccines by Pfizer and Moderna need to be cooled way below zero, even European countries struggle with their distribution due to that. So the only viable option for a lot of developing countries is the vaccine by AstraZeneca, and theyre unable to produce at the capacity they originally thought they could 

 

edit: i also just read the article and i mean... The top 3 is the US, China and India. Those 3 countries make up 3 billion out of 7.8 billion people. suddenly, the numbers dont seem that bad

Well according to worldometer it is only wealthy countries that appear worst hit, but that might be because they can afford testing kits.  A lot of countries have also hidden the true extent of the virus because of low testing so their economies aren’t completely ruined.  No tests = no cases = no lockdown.

Dominican Republic got the vaccine
