The creators of Pokemon Go have announced they've punished more than five million players for cheating.

In a blog post https://nianticlabs.com/blog/cheatingupdate-022321, Niantic said it issued sanctions to players across three games - Pokemon Go, Ingress, and Harry Potter Wizards Unite.

It said since 2020, more than 20% of those were permanent bans.

"We have made a commitment with all of our players towards promoting fair gameplay...and improving transparency with our players," the creator wrote.

I mean, it is clear that is the ToC, so why do be these people still attempting it? :oprah:

I will never understand why people cheat on video games, I mean it's a game, you're supposed to play it for fun...

People still play this game :air:

I still do :flop: almost every day even if it's just to get the daily bonus, I log in very quickly but I like to complete the tasks and obviously to catch the new pokemon. As I used to live by myself so I cannot have a meal without my phone so I'm either playing games or scrolling down Instagram or gagadaily etc while I'm eating (oversharing a little bit)

I mean, it is fun. But with Pokemon go there are certain types of Pokemon which can only be found in certain areas/countries in the world. The only real way to catch these Pokemon is by travelling, which is expensive and impossible at this moment in time.

I definitely understand why people do it

They can be in some mental condition or situation though, that caused them to do what they do aka Murder.

Considering GO is not even competition game, there is not enough reason to justify. :flower:

I genuinely thought the game died a long time ago!! I'm really surprised that people still play it, especially that I only played it for a few weeks after release then stopped.

oh wow that's a lit of players... I think I thought it died because it was very hyped at first and news were everywhere about it then people stopped talking about it idk. I'm glad y'all are still enjoying it though!

With the introduction of the PVP Battle League system it has become a competition game a year ago :emma: The main reason people cheat is the regional availability of Pokémon.

https://pokemongohub.net/post/wiki/regional-pokemon-list/

The system also introduced weekly bonuses for people who walk 5km, 25km and 50km and 100km per week and people tried to abuse the system, using spoofing apps to simulate walking. In the early beginning of these anti-spoofing filters being employed, a lot of players were penalized for actually just playing while they were riding along in a car whose driving patterns caused their alogrithm to become suspicious.

Last year remote raiding was introduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, because like 10+ people meeting up outside was a bit problematic, but before being able to participate in remote was an option, people would spoof distances of like 300m in order to be closer to an arena to participate in a raid, especially when Covid-19 first spread.

Also I gotta say... I don't trust Niantic's framing of "90% of people we acussed of cheating stopped cheating" because false accusations were so frequent, I wonder how many people that were accused of cheating actually weren't. :emma:
