Dairy Queen rejects gay’s request 4 a cake bc it’s a family establishment

A Canadian Dairy Queen franchise owner has apologized after his store turned away a lesbian’s request for a personalized birthday cake. Summer Gibbons was told the store is a “family establishment” as the reason for being turned away.

But owner Tim Morrison is apologizing and admitting it was the wrong decision, and Gibbons stressed that she doesn’t want to vilify the owner because he’s willing to learn.

“Our intent is to create custom cakes that are inclusive and nondiscriminatory, which is why we have a policy that custom cake orders only can include inclusive and nondiscriminatory language. After talking with fans and employees, I acknowledge we did not properly follow our policy,” Morrison said.

Gibbons and her sister ordered an ice cream cake with the words “Happy birthday lesbian” written on it. While the employee accepted the order, Gibbons says the manager stepped in and declined to do the cake.

“Her supervisor told her it was family establishment and they can’t put that on a cake for other families to see,” Gibbons told Global News.

When she followed up with Morrison, he wasn’t any help at first, she says.

“He said it’s policy because it was sexual in nature to put on a cake.”

But after thinking about his decision and listening to employees, Morrison concluded he was in the wrong and apologized to Gibbons for his error.

“I am truly sorry for the harm we caused,” he said. “I will be retraining the team on custom cake orders.”

“He knows what he said was wrong. We are all human and make mistakes,” Gibbons said. “I respect his apology, maybe he can get retrained himself.”

In the end, Gibbons got her birthday cake. Another Dairy Queen fulfilled the order.

I can see how it could be seen as offensive, because some people use that phrase to degrade others. But if they are lesbians, then what's the problem?

glad he apologized and expressed regret, it seems like they were actually trying to do the right thing. i can understand why they didnt want to do it, but i can also understand siblings joking like that between themselves

I see both sides and I kinda understand both sides.. Owner seems to be really sorry and his apology seems sincere so there’s that.

It's a bizarre message, but I don't think this would classify as compelled speech on behalf of the baker. Companies should have the right to refuse making products with slurs or discriminatory messages, but what is the point of personalizing a cake if you can't make it say what you want within reason?

I mean i get the reasoning, that it might read like someone made it maliciously or disrespectfully, but like why would he even have to display it for "families to see"? Just store it in the back

Imo, the cake request was in bad taste. It is customary to use a person's name on a birthday cake.

Benefit of the doubt, the way that's worded does seem a bit offensive  like, if I saw that cake, I would assume it was some stupid teenaged chick getting her friend a mean cake because "lmao she's such a lezzy ha ha ha"

i'm gonna be honest... why are north americans so obsessed with industrially manufactured cake in the first place?  i feel like getting an entire cake made for a birthday is really not a thing here, unless you celebrate a round birthday and invite 20+ people, people usually bake their own cakes. And tbh I'd rather spend some time baking a cake and frosting it with my favorite slur to call my best friend than... eat a semi-industrialized dairy queen cake full off artificial colorants that may trigger ADHD-like meltdowns
