In fairness, the nation isn’t young. Indigenous Australians have lived on Australian soil for 65000 years. 

It is the removal of ‘young’ rather than the inclusion of ‘one’ that I think is most significant.

It may seem small, and in the greater scheme of things it is, but this change is a part of a greater push to acknowledge the cultures and history of this nation that go far, far, far beyond colonialism.

Australia isn’t a young country, it has an old and ancient history that is significant and important.

From "we are young" to "we are one"

"Young" meant the age of the country, ignoring how many thousands of years Aboriginal people have been here for.

To be honest I'm not really into the change. Mainly I think they chose the wrong word to change it to. Even in as much as the change regards indigenous australians, we are a nation that is made up of differences and diversity, and even the indigenous have their own identity and culture and distinction (and deserve a parliamentary voice). It feels a bit lazy (like stolen from the "we are australian" song). It's lazy to think they're honouring the indigenous people by removing their distinction as having many nations that are not the same as what we would call Australia, but I can see why changing it will make one perceived slight less obnoxious. The change feels a bit overbearing itself though, like a little bit Orwellian or impersonal. But I guess a national anthem has to be pretty base and common...

 

I always found it kind of touching seeing people like the old diggers singing the line "We are young and free" even though they were like 95 or something. I know it's embroiled in the perspective that the song is commenting on the status of the nation being a relatively young nation but I don't know if its so explicit, I think that line is really meant to be more poetic. Like about a bright potential and future and youthful energy or something. Then again maybe that just makes it ageist or something.

 

I just wanna make it clear I'm not decrying the change as though there is no good in it, or desperately clinging conservatively to the past. It's not some case of political correctness gone crazy. Just gotta adjust to it now.
