Why did G.U.Y. flop?

- the song was about power-bottoming, the GP was never going to jump on board.

- the video was incredibly long and featured references a non-Gaga fan wouldn't get at first.

it flopped because nobody knew it happened. It literally had NO momentum, NO real promotion and with the ARTPOP film being released first and the short video afterwards, it killed the replay value.

Jesus, the lack of taste on this thread... Anyway

1-) It's a bop, indeed, but not a single-worthy one. It was kind of a grower sonically tbh

2-) People weren't interested on her that time

3-) Gaga didn't promote it

4-) It had a 10min MV

G.U.Y. was destined to flop tbh, but it's far from being a bad song. It's so slutty, dumb yet so empowered and very Gaga-esque. It wasn't even that dated in 2014, and the production is the best thing about it. I don't think it's one of her best songs though, but it's really nice imo

This is low key a feminist song, and everyone is here bashing it as a bimbo sex song. I remember many critics saying that G.U.Y. should have been the lead single. It was honestly because she had no radio pull at that point in time, and G.U.Y. was hers to handle. She was back to circuiting satellite radio for it. Mix that with the GP having Katy as the Queen at the time, shoved down their throats with Prism :huntyga: Every GP type person I showed it thought it was amazing, and most of them also said ARTPOP was her best album at the time. It was an interesting time back then.

This also reminds me of John Wayne. Every GP/Straight I showed it to was like, DAMN, why wasn’t that at the super bowl? Why wasn’t that on the radio? :ohwell:

because the song wasn’t single material. Fans on here always find a song or two each era to hype hype hype and beg for it to be a single. During ARTPOP it was GUY and that (god awful) Gypsy. This era is Replay and Stupid Love. When stupid love leaked everyone was praising the song like it was Gaga’s second coming masterpiece. When it was released as a single, though, people started to ignore it because it didn’t do as well as they expected it to do. Once the song is released as a single and it’s not doing well, they find an excuse as to why it’s not doing well and ditch the song. Little Managers don’t know what’s best but will never learn their lesson :stalkga:

I agree. Most people, despite acting like they do, have no idea what makes a song 'single worthy.' Just because the song is a bop and has a catchy hook and chorus does not make it single worthy. There are people who dedicate their careers to market research, examining chart performance of songs, following underlying trends, etc. to determine what makes a song 'single worthy'.

part of me wishes Sexxx Dreams could have been the single. i think it’s a much better song than GUY. Venus is the best of the three but it would be even weirder than SD as a single.

There was a huge gap between Applause release and G.U.Y. Also the fact that she released the video like within the same time killed the hype.

G.U.Y Era was one of my favs tho. And the video is literally in my top 3 favorites!

Get Applause & G.U.Y to 1B views!
