France, Sweden and Spain confirm cases of new coronavirus variant

The case in France is a French citizen who lives in England and had left London for Tours on 19 December. He is currently self-isolating at home and is said to be doing fine.

Sweden's health agency said a traveller there was ill with the strain but had been self-isolating since he returned from the UK.

Spain has confirmed four cases of the more contagious coronavirus variant recently identified in the UK. The infections - all in Madrid - were linked to recent UK travel, the regional deputy health chief said.

Denmark and the Netherlands have also reported cases in the past few days.

Scientists say the new variant is considerably more transmissible than previous strains.

There is no evidence that the new variant is more lethal, and the leading vaccines developed in recent months should still work, experts say.

Is this the London strain or the South African one?

This was always my fear... more hosts = more chances for mutations = more chances some of them stick and make the virus worse/the vaccine ineffective. That in part, to me, is why flattening the curve was so important!
