Well they don’t know that yet since they need to do more tests on the new variants. It has been shown to be more infectious and more deadly within childen and young adults, according to the S.A officials. 

Its better to be extremely cautious than too lackadaisical about things. And no, the UK is getting all the heat because the UK Government has made a dogs dinner out of this situation and has failed to contain the new variant.

You do know some people were stuck in countries and had to go back to their homes? That's exactly what they do. Other times it's for urgent family matters. Ive not seen people travelling for christmas outside their countries so far

Not sure if this is a serious question, but basically the UK is among the countries that do the most genomic sequencing. (Here's how countries perform by this metric: UK sequences 56.6 out of 1000 cases, Denmark 114; USA 2.59, France 0.945, Germany 0.781). So while the UK/SA variant might already be present in other countries, the countries who do more sequencing are likelier to detect it (hence why Denmark and the Netherlands have detected the UK variant). Frankly I'd be surprised if Germany didn't announce that it had a somewhat high prevalence of the UK variant or its own variant, since the "lockdown light" measures they put into place--even taking COVIDiots' actions into account--should have been more successful in reducing case numbers...

In general, by the time there is sufficient evidence to show that a particular variant is a significant mutation that should be contained, closing borders is already too late. Aside from shutting international borders, the only thing countries can do is to do more sequencing domestically.

Edit: It seems that many people seem to think that the UK/SA variants are the only mutations; they are not. The virus' genome changes ever so slightly every time it gets transmitted, and so there are literally thousands of mutations of SARS-CoV-2 circulating, which you can track here. The UK and SA ones are notable because of the scale of mutation and the results of those mutations. But it is highly likely that the vaccines will work on both mutations, which is some good news

And there's still people who think group immunity (without a vaccine) or infecting the young is the way to go  that's how you get such mutations

 

Welp, I'm pretty sure this virus is already widespread where I live (the Netherlands) and there's no going back by now. I'm going to continue doing the same I've done for the past months which is self-isolate and minimize social contacts to about 1-2 per month plus my immediate family  I'm doing my best not to get and not to spread this virus, getting overly negative over ineffective governments and stupid people is probably going to be worse for my health than getting the virus itself
