It is almost exactly one year since the coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 was identified by Chinese scientists as the source of a new, lethal respiratory illness. Since, more than 1.5 million people have died globally, economies worldwide have shut down multiple times and societies have isolated in their homes and watched holidays pass without the closeness of family and friends. Ahead of us is a year undertaking the most logistically challenging public health campaign ever. But, in this, Yale professor and social epidemiologist Dr Nicholas Christakis brings cold comfort, as laid in his new book Apollo’s Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live. And that is because he sees a pattern. “One of the arguments in the book is that what’s happening to us may seem to so many people to be alien and unnatural, but plagues are not new to our species – they’re just new to us,” said Christakis, whose expertise is in how our behaviors influence contagion in society. “Our world has changed, there’s a new deadly pathogen that is circulating, we’re not the first people that have had to face this threat, and a lot will be asked of us,” said Christakis. “And we’re just going to have to be grown up about it.” Source Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I will never forget it. 2020 has definitely shown me how many ignorant, hypocritical, and selfish a-holes there are in the US (I'm sure other parts of the world as well), and I've lost my faith in people as a whole, but at the same time, I've also seen glimmers of generosity and love that have moved me. I can't wait till I can go out to eat again, travel to foreign countries, get a pedicure, get my eyebrows waxed, visit the hair salon, and watch movies in the cinema. I first thought “we’ll return to normalcy in like 2 years” but there is constant change regardless lol smartphones came out and created a new normal, streaming services are a new normal, so I’m excited to see how culture develops after this. I know a friend who has not shopped since last year. She says she will buy shoes, dresses and travel when pandemic ends. I know who went bankrupt. But those who save are alot too. Movies will be released and theaters will be full.. Artists will tour and highest grossing tours will happen after pandemic imo. 2021 summer will be a good year for music, tour, art, movies. People have produced in pandemic and will put their art after social distance has end. So, putting an album in February, March time and touring at next years summer is a nice way to get them coins for musicians. For example, Taylor gets 5-6 million for night. Even if this year was pretty rough, there are reasons why we needed it and we can learn from it. We, as a species, are very stubborn and very selfish. We have mistreated this world so much that a bigger karma got to us. And maybe it's the only way we learn (we needed 2 wars to change a little bit, yet we haven't learned that much) Hope we can learn to be more careful towards this planet, that is the only thing we have. Autumn 2021 will be the best period in my life I think I'm planning to refurniture my apartment the coming months so I can have silent discos, movie nights and karaoke nights in the living room. Prices for going out and travelling are going to be through the roof, as if it's NYE every night. House parties are going to be the best alternative. So I finally got a job, cycling (food delivery) through the rain every evening for less than minimum wage to pay for stuff. I don't recognize spending less though. I've become much more conscious of things like proper food, skincare, healthcare insurance coverage and such, so I'm spending more on that, and I've become much more impulsive generally (e.g. buying a lot of Chromatica merch, or losing a few thousand euros in the first month because I bet against the market.. lol).
