Doot 2 Posted September 12, 2020 Share Posted September 12, 2020 The 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September, 11, 2001, was marked intimately on Friday as America again copes with enormous loss. From New York City to Washington, DC, to Pennsylvania -- where nearly 3,000 people perished when hijackers took control of four commercial airplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville -- relatives of the dead and politicians wore masks and tried to stand six feet apart as they paid their respects. Let us use this time to pay our respects and remember all of those who lost their lives that day, to the family and friends, and to everyone else who was affected by this tragedy. When I got to class that morning, our teacher stopped the class so we could see the tragedy unfold on TV and that was when I saw the 2nd plane hit WTC's southern tower. Everyone remembers what they were doing that day when it happened, regardless of the country. Many people like to diminish the horror of this date due to their dislike for the US, but let’s remember it was still nearly 3000 people who lost their lives. Sometimes I watch footage of the attacks and it’s hard to process that this really happened, it looks straight out of some movie that’s how shocking it was. Doot 2 Posted September 12, 2020 Author Share Posted September 12, 2020 I remember I was in elementary school, and they shut down the classes and had us all stay in one room until the end of the day, and I never really felt the gravity of what happened till I was older. I remember when the first Spider-Man movie came out, they had a scene in the trailer (which was pulled) where a helicopter got caught in a giant web in between the two towers. On a side note, when I was younger I use to study the event a lot and get into conspiracy theories etc, anyways, has anybody else noticed that like 80% of the original videos that were on YT have been taken down? Before there were literally hundreds of videos of every moment, every angle, from professional broadcasts to civilian filmed videos etc. Now all these videos seem to be getting removed and I think it’s so strange and feels like it’s erasing history. She told us the news. I clearly remember a woman whom I later learned was from India saying, "Good, it's time the US experienced something like this so that Americans will understand what it's like to suffer." (I am paraphrasing because I obviously don't remember her words verbatim.) To be fair, I don't think she comprehended the full gravity of the situation when she said that. This was when the first plane hit. I walked off to Japanese class in a total daze. I was in first-year Japanese, and we'd only been in class about a week or so. Our instructor looked very grim and said to us, "こまりますね" (komarimasu ne), which is an expression used to lament that something negative has happened. After class, I passed a campus convenience store that had the TV on. I stood outside on the sidewalk in disbelief, watching some cable news network airing the second plane crash. I don' t know how long I stood there. I didn't have cable back in my apartment, so I kept watching the news from the sidewalk. When I returned home that day, I called up Comcast and put in an order to have it installed. I had friends living in NYC, including my former college roommate. I remember frantically calling and emailing people to check on them, and panicking when it was a day or more before I heard back (cell lines were clogged). When I read their chilling accounts, I was shaken. The city where I was living was about 90 minutes away from NYC, and a lot of people commuted there for work, including my professor's husband, who'd been in NYC that day.
