LOVEDRUG 10,405
so many people here, and within stan culture as a whole have no idea what the criteria for the grammy awards for pop vocal album or pop solo performance are. neither of these awards judge on vocal performance or vocal technique. these awards are NOT awarded to the artist who has the best vocals or the best vocal ability. it simply means a track/album that contains vocals. this is to obviously differentiate from instrumental. from 1969 until 2011, the grammy's awarded the award for 'best pop instrumental performance', which is the origin of the pop solo performance grammy award, an award that differentiates from the instrumental one, not one that judges artists solely for their vocal or technical performance. obviously, vocal performance still does play a role, but it plays an equally important role as anything else, from the lyricism to the production. the grammy for 'best contemporary instrumental album' is still awarded every year, and is the counterpart to 'pop vocal album'. neither of these awards judge on vocal ability or vocal performance, they judge on everything about that song or album combined. the word 'vocal' purely exists as a reference to the instrumental awards. i've seen a lot of people saying 'x couldn't win or be submitted for the grammy for pop vocal album or pop solo performance because it 'isn't a vocally strong song' or it 'isn't her best vocal performance'. this has no impact. a clear example is how wwafawdwg won the pop vocal album grammy over the gift or thank u, next, even though technically the other two are much more vocally advanced. it won purely because it was 'the best' non-instrumental pop album. anyways, rant over. i just saw some people getting confused so wanted to clarify. Anderson123 37,496
Ariana has an amazing voice and Thank U Next is a cool album but Billie's was better in my opinion, she deserved those awards no matter how salty people got. That was just Finneas and Billie at home making music just for the fun of it. That's the type of artists that deserve these things. And those who make fun of it because it's "just whispering" are like those who made fun of Gaga for wearing her clothes and didn't pay attention to her voice and songwriting skills til later in her career with Cheek To Cheek, Joanne and A Star Is Born. StrawberryBlond 14,568
I believe "vocal performance" was the phrase put there so that it separated it from instrumentals. Though how many "songs" are just instrumentals? It's just an unnecessarily long title, which the Grammys are famous for. The need to put in this phrase means it confuses a lot of people and they'll hold it against someone who wins if they're not the best singer. It's like when I first got into the Grammys, I was baffled as to how AOTY could be awarded to anyone who didn't have the bestselling, definitive album. Then I found out it's like any other award where it's down to how good the album is. In which case, why do they leave "best" out? They put it in all their other awards except the big five. And SOTY/ROTY is kinda obsolete now because the majority of artists write their own songs, so they're winning the same award for the exact same thing most of the time. But those ones were first conceived in 1959, when most singers didn't write their songs so it made sense at the time that the songwriters got their dues. But nowadays, what's the point?
