While PI was the lead of Joanne, it didn't really go anywhere and MR was already gaining a lot of traction. The VMA performance highlighted Chromatica specifically and she never even performed her lead single once. Of course she performed it. Not only is it the lead but she hadn't performed it anywhere else before. The song was also a top 10 hit, (however shortly lived that was) it makes a lot of sense that she'd perform it. The first round of nominating starts soon. SL got good reviews, it's smart she brought it back into public consciousness now. To the people in here saying "of course she'd perform SL it's the lead!" - did she have to make it her finale? Did she have to perform the entire song? Did she have to do a ballad portion AND a dance portion? Some of ya'll don't understand that music is a business and every decision is strategic and intentional to optimize success.
