Idk about ratings but if MTV uploads the performance onto YouTube quickly I can see it getting 20M in its first week

So Bad Romance was not released yet? I remember her promoting BTW album at the VMAs so I imagine she would be done with TFM? im confused

The last TFM single was released 4 months before the 2010 VMAs, so I guess she was pretty much done promoting it. Someone also brought up that there was some weird rule back then that you couldn't perform at the VMAs 2 years in a row, and she had performed Paparazzi the previous year.

Full audience:

The awards were also simulcast on 11 other Viacom channels (VH1, Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, Comedy Central, BET, Paramount Network, CMT, MTV2, TV Land, MTV Classic, Logo and BETHer). The 12-network telecast recorded a 6 percent.

Complete viewership numbers for all 12 channels tallies 4.9 million, also down about 6 percent from last year's 5.2 million viewers (on 10 channels).

The awards ceremony also recorded big gains in social and online video views, which were up 85 percent year to year and a key point of emphasis in reaching  the network's core young-adult audience. Social engagement around the VMAs also more than doubled year to year in the month leading up to the awards, per figures from Conviva Social Insights.

The way it all went downhill after 2015... I mean it's what they deserve for that lineup

The stupidity at not promoting the Taylor/Nicki performance is unbelievable to me quite frankly :selena:

Dang what happened in 2012?

It was on a Monday night I believe.

I also vaguely remember watching, and even at 11 realizing it was dull

Good point. It is possible then that the rule may have been added later, and then removed some time after that.

I don’t think it ever existed because Taylor performed 2009 and 2010

wow the ratings are terrible. I don‘t get it why streaming platforms are not buying the rights. VMAs would suit the Netflix aesthetic and there are millions of 27+, millenials and gen z subscribers who would give the VMAs a revival.

Yikes they went downhill fast, I can see why tho. The show got very stale with both performances and red carpets. also TV in general isn't as popular as it used to be, they should really just stream it online.

That said, I'm excited for this years. Mainly just for Gaga, Ari and Miley's performances.
