Kaavan, a 35-year-old male elephant (Elephas maximus maximus), is finally set to end his captivity inside a poorly maintained zoo in Pakistan after a historic court order  by the Islamabad High Court. The court ruled that the elephant be relocated from the Islamabad Zoo (previously known as Marghazar Zoo) to a sanctuary where he can roam free.

Based on reports that the elephant was kept in less-than-ideal conditions, activists around the world, including the pop icon Cher, campaigned for Kaavan’s release beginning in 2016. A petition demanding that Kaavan be freed was signed by more than 400,000 people from around the world.

Perhaps the most important role of captive elephants is to serve as ambassadors for their wild brethren, Prithiviraj Fernando said. A friendly elephant can kindle a sense of wonderment and love in a child that lasts a lifetime. Such feelings could translate into a desire to protect and conserve elephants in the future, he said.

To be set free as in back into the regular wild?

It'll be dead within a few weeks. :saladga:

Thats like if I set my little dog free :laughga:

It’s never lived in the wild before, how could they expect him to just live there now :enigma:

There have been multiple studies showing animals born or kept in captivity for a long time are as good as dead when released in the wild.

People shouldn't celebrate this. We need to celebrate zoos maintaining endangered species and people need to stop putting animals in zoos in general.

@Doot @BillieGOAT the article says he's going to a sanctuary, he'll still be looked after, just not in that horrible place

If they’re making sure he stays cared for, fed, etc. then I suppose we have no choice but to stan his crib upgrade :enigma:
