Rare bug-eating plant found near Michigan border after 40 years of absence

A rare insect-eating plant with long tentacles and tiny leaves tipped with red-colored glands that ooze alluring nectar has been found just outside Michigan, in a county where it hadn't been seen for 40 years.

The English sundew or Drosera anglica is a threatened plant in Wisconsin, where it was uncovered by trained volunteers, along with 59 never-before-seen populations of other plants, in the state.

The discovery sparked intense interest in the plant and raised some concerns about climate change and rising water levels of the Great Lakes, ecological biodiversity and how living things are interconnected.

 

Since news of the sundew has become public, natural resource officials said Wisconsin residents have been reporting sightings of the unusual plant in other counties throughout the state. 

"These new discoveries are very exciting," said Kevin Doyle, a conservation botanist with Wisconsin's DNR. "They help increase our understanding of the number and locations of rare plant species so we can better monitor and protect them."
