Man saves drowning coyote pup, embarks on adventure on Red Deer, South Sask

According to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan, a man was recently rafting down the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan rivers “when he heard a commotion coming from somewhere along the shoreline.

The animal was almost entirely submerged, and the water was dark and murky, so Justin (animal's rescuer) couldn’t immediately identify the type of animal. Reaching for it, Justin fell out of his raft — but was able to locate a coyote pup in the water.

When Justin made it back to his raft with the animal, “the little coyote pup was unconscious and didn’t seem to be breathing. The pup was lucky yet again as Justin had experience with CPR and was able to do a modified Heimlich manoeuvre by pushing on its belly. After a few pushes, water squirted out of the coyote’s nose and he was breathing again!”

WRSOS President Bonnie Dell says the pup, estimated to be between eight and 10 weeks old, is now being cared for at Wild and Cared Free Wildlife Rehabilitation in Moose Jaw, which was already caring for some orphaned coyotes. The pup, now named Yip Yip, is currently socializing with other pups.
