Chromatica 7,031
Dolly Parton is one of my favorite musicians of all time, but I'll admit that I find most of her albums inconsistent in terms of quality. I love hundreds of her songs, but they're scattered throughout her discography. If you asked me what my top ten Dolly Parton songs are, most of them wouldn't be on these albums. I haven't listened to all of them, but the ones I enjoy the most consistently throughout are: Trigger warning Spoiler Better Day (Despite it also being in your favorites list I imagine this is highly controversial) Backwoods Barbie Trio II 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs ---- All I Can Do Great Balls of Fire

The ones that stood out the most were: Treasures White Limozeen Jolene Coat of Many Colors (the title track is probably my favorite song of hers) What you want Lady Gaga🥂 What you want with Christina🥂

rumours 45,521
Wow @Miss Dolly this is a hard one... I would say my favorite Dolly album is Little Sparrow. In my opinion, it is an almost perfect record in terms of lyrical content and sonic cohesion. Trio I would also be a contender imo as an album that is objectively wonderful. Of her more pop material, 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs is probably her best. As a side note, the quality of the music she was putting out around the turn of the century (after she parted ways with Columbia) is some of the best stuff in her career. To think from 1998-2002 she made Hungry Again (a gem of an album that was met with critical acclaim but subpar commercial success), Trio II, The Grass is Blue, Little Sparrow, and Halos and Horns. All of those are fantastic records and imo much better as wholes than much of what was released during her commercial prime due to the way RCA operated in the 70s and 80s. Just listened to Little Sparrow! I didn't ever expect it to be so good. Something about the cover art/name made it seem inaccessible to me. There are some really good songs here! The new version of Down from Dover.

Trust me, the album gets even better after multiple listens . And yeah, as much as I love the original recording she did of Down From Dover, the one on Little Sparrow is so hauntingly beautiful imo. What were your favorites and least favorites in the album upon first listen? And like I said in my previous comment, I'd highly recommend all her stuff from the 1998-2002 era. That era includes what may easily be her most underrated album of all time - Hungry Again. It's has less of that sort of atmospheric sound prevalent in Little Sparrow but is also more commercial than something like The Grass is Blue (also a great album). Hungry Again was made following a multiple week fast in the Appalachian Mountains where she wrote constantly. It's a real shame cause it was hailed by critics... but it just couldn't make much of a commercial impact because of country radio refusing to play her at that point.
