They did protect wearers from possibly spreading the virus to others. And there is evidence that such masks reduce the exhaled aerosols from infectious, but asymptomatic, individuals. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c03252 By blocking the exhale of virus particles in to the air around you, your mask is keeping the virus from spreading. Additionally, the masks serve as a really helpful physical barrier when you cough or sneeze. And another tests done by a Professor in Japan proves wearing a mask does seem to lower the chances of getting infected so long worn properly. Surprisingly, the mask fashioned from a handkerchief has the same effectiveness as a surgical mask, but even more so, who knew paper towels were the most effective. https://www.asiaone.com/lifestyle/surgical-mask-paper-towel-mask-or-cloth-mask-japanese-professor-tests-which-most Or here is the explanation in pictorials for dummies: Just be considerate if not for yourself then for others and stop being so headstrong. IndianMonster 6
This is sad. Why are Americans unable to control the spread? are these states densely populated or are people just careless? No sympathies for anyone who is not wearing a mask and putting other's lives in danger. U can choke

That is just a testament on how contagious this virus is & the importance of social distancing and face covering practices in public as well as hand washing. It must be nice to think that the number of actual cases don't matter. What a privileged way to look at it. Considering how contagious the virus is, you don't get to choose whether or not you get it and you don't get to choose whether you get a mild or a severe case. If everybody thought the way that you did, we would all have it and the people who would die would just be collateral damage like you seemed to just imply. Is that really how you feel? Actually if everyone got it, we’ll eventually develop herd immunity after many more deaths. You can’t blame some states as their livelihoods are dwindling away to poverty. it’s a lose / lose situation for them.

Mister G 10,513
The fact that people think this is something that should be taken lightly. I have seen what this does to people and have had relatives that got sick from it; one just got discharged from the hospital on Saturday after 2 months of fighting it. I love how people think if they catch it that it’ll just pass; no one knows how their body will react if they get sick so best wishes to the individuals that think going back to a normal routine right away is the smart thing to do. But yeah go white privilege for you lol. seems like it's a cool thing to blame everything on white privilege. (especially considering I was literally at the point that I could not pay my mortgage and had to defer a lot of my bills and the only thing that prevented me from losing my livelihood was federal and state benefits). it's not my fault that congress isn't doing enough to keep municipalities and families from losing everything. I strongly believe the trillions of dollars that the government has found to spend on unnecessary wars and bailouts for the top one tenth of 1% and trans national corporations should have been direct cash payments to the people who are now losing their homes and jobs. So while the partisan congress is at a stalemate, what do you expect states to do with their people’s livelihoods? Congress won’t get anywhere as long as Mitch is in power. He is THE biggest obstacle as well as the sole person responsible for giving corporations handouts instead of the middle class and the poor. Seems ignorant to think people have a choice in this. Reopen, you lose. Stay closed, you lose. Ignorance equates to white privilege.

And again, it seems like it's the cool thing to blame everything you disagree with on white privilege. In this case, you're just wrong. Sorry about it but that's the truth. What's fascinating is that you're attacking me for saying that @Florin was being insensitive about people's lives by saying that the number of cases don't matter. You then blamed my opinion on white privilege when you basically said that the virus needs to run its course for the sake of herd immunity. What communities are disproportionately affected by covid-19? Black and brown communities. So I guess you're saying that black and brown folks should die disproportionately so we can all have herd immunity. Is that what you're saying because that's what it sounds like?
