Arizona, Texas, Florida Sees Record Increases

Arizona did not record its first 20,000 cases until June 1, but it took less than three weeks for the state to record 20,000 more. So on Wednesday, its governor, Doug Ducey, said he would switch gears and allow mayors to require mask wearing if they see the need.

“The trend is headed in the wrong direction,” Mr. Ducey said at a news conference.

The state has merely recommended masks, and localities were precluded from drafting more restrictive rules.

But with cases rising swiftly and the mayors of Phoenix and Tucson urging him to let them mandate masks, Mr. Ducey said he would allow local governments to set their own mask policies.

In Texas, which also saw record case increases this week, similar tensions have arisen between local officials and the governor, whose statewide reopening orders take precedence. The mayors of nine cities sent a letter to Gov. Greg Abbott urging him to give them the authority to require masks.

“A one-size-fits-all approach is not the best option,” said the letter, whose signers included the mayors of Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. “We should trust local officials to make informed choices about health policy.”

Although Mr. Abbott has strongly urged wearing face masks, the state’s policies do not require their use, and the governor has resisted calls to do so, saying that he believed in “individual responsibility” and not “government mandates.”

But at least one Texas county got permission to go ahead with a limited mask requirement.

Meanwhile, Florida also reported its second-highest new daily increase of coronavirus cases Wednesday with 2,610 announced. This comes a day after Florida reported a record-high one-day increase of 2,783 cases on Tuesday.

Miami, among Florida's most populous cities, won't move into the next phase of reopening because of concern over rising COVID-19 cases, Mayor Francis Suarez announced at a Monday news conference.

Although the majority of the state is in Phase 2 of reopening, rising new coronavirus cases may put a damper on residents' new freedom.

When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's stay-at-home order expired May 4, there were roughly 680 cases being diagnosed each day in the state. As of June 14, Florida's seven-day rolling average for new COVID-19 infections, which accounts for fluctuations in the number of cases, was 1,661 per day.

State officials have previously pointed to increased testing as a possible explanation for the influx of new cases.

Yeah well here in Florida I wear a mask everywhere I go. I keep distanced and wash my hands constantly, but what good is it when some businesses that are open don't make these practices mandatory? People are not making the smart, considerate choices that are going to help deter further spread. :saladga:

Americans being Americans got board of staying inside carrying about their health

I still go out with a mask on but even where I live (democratic state with more covid laws) people just don’t seem to care anymore.

Never thought I'd say this but thank god I live in Pennsylvania.  Lot's of idiots here too but stores, restaurants, etc have been following the laws very strictly around us and our numbers are actually pretty good right now.

All of you in these states, I hope you and your family stay safe and healthy.  Good luck out there

Same in California none of those things are being enforced anymore so no one is even pretending to care.

Texas oomfs haven’t stopped throwing hole since this whole thing started. Like, they didn’t even try.

Texas wasn't doing that bad until they opened up and especially after Memorial Day. 4th of July will be another COVID party.

We don’t wear masks in BC, Canada for the most part but that’s because we stayed inside until our R value was less than 1! It’s still like R 5 in Texas and they’re acting like it’s R 0.1

I’m from Houston and at my job it’s not required for customers to wear masks but we have to. People are idiots. They comes in and complain about all of our preventative measures, say the workers shouldn’t have to wear masks, and then spew some random BS they read somewhere about how you can’t even get it “because blah blah blah”. I hope they shut us down again. The amount of people I’ve heard saying this isn’t serious or real is enough proof that people can’t make smart decisions on their own.

We don't have a choice, the government is not giving us money anymore so we have to open our businesses or we lose everything

I can’t stand customers that refuse to wear masks then wanna get close to you. If we have to wear them for 8 hours then they can for 1 hour. :madge:
