Sorry but I don’t know much about Churchill’s views on racism, but he led us through a world war. I won’t stand for his statue to be thrown in the Thames. Colston was deserved, he was a known slave treader. But Churchill, really? If that happened, the rest of the country would not take this movement seriously and it will 100% backfire and cause more racism. London protesters need to be careful. I don’t think tearing down Churchill will help.

I think people need to put their egos aside and realise that, yes, Churchill isn't the war hero angel everyone makes out to be. (NOT aimed at you btw). There is a whole Wikipedia page on his racial views and what he did. The information is out there. Its time to wake up and learn the real history instead of the glamorised version we got taught in the classroom.

Churchill was the prime minister at the time... but if it weren't for the Americans helping the UK out, we wouldn't have won the war. Granted, it must not be easy for someone to be prime minister during a war. But that doesn't mean that everything else he did that was evil should be swept under the carpet. Yes, I do imagine outrage if Churchill gets taken down... but I think its at that point we need to have serious conversations with people and tell people the truth.

i don't think anyones trying to "Erase" history. having statues of racist people or people who contributed to abhorrent things in the past isn't exactly progressive though, and they shouldn't be glorified in statues anymore.

CELINE

Most Politicians during those days are borderline and legitimately Racist. Britain was still an Empire and of course with that they've inherited a superiority complex.

But these THUGS have no part in our future. They are symbols of oppression, glorified for no good goddamn reason.

Every day they are up, they are a reminder that history has wrongfully made them the “Superior People” and for any black person, this is an insult.

At least one of those "thugs" is one of the reasons why Hitler didnt win. :huntyga: Maybe we shouldn't forget the good things that guy did.  I doubt that the world wants to imagine what Hitler would have done with the black people if he won.

I'm not familiar with what racist things Churchill has done, but even Lincoln who ended slavery had statements that would be considered racists today.

they're not the superior people. sure, they WERE, but history is history. I wouldn't even want a statue of Hitler taken down. history shows trial and error, and though it is controversial, it's still beautiful to look at how far we've come

A statue is literally a way of honouring or celebrating somebody and their achievements. Imagine having to walk past a statue of somebody that caused huge damage to your ancestors. It is not erasing history. Nobody is doing that to eradicate the history, it’s the symbol of it. Saying you’d want a statue of Hitler is incredibly insensitive and I think you need to reconsider that point.

I wonder if people know that it was stolen from a prince who was not even 18. Also I was reading that the British owe India 45 trillion dollars, which is 17x their GDP :billie:

I don't think i needto change my opinion because i see it asa celebration of pain and how far we have gotten, how much civilization has prevailed.

I am sure there are thousands of photos, videos and possibly even 3D scans of these statues. And now there is video footage of them getting taken down.

Everything gets changed, moved or destroyed over time. Nothing can last forever. But as long as it is recorded in some way, it has not been  erased.

Could’ve just ended the post here tbh

Yes he did good things in wartime but he was also incredibly racist and it isn’t just “views” - he was literally genocidal.

The UK education system has a way of brainwashing us to glorify figures like Churchill and make us think that we can’t criticise them in any way. You can acknowledge the good he did for the country and acknowledge that he was hugely racist at the same time.

The way white British people get so angry about stuff like this but have at best moderate disapproval of the racism in our country (past and present) is so frustrating.

So you’d want us to erect a statue of Hitler to honour his victims? Seems... backwards
