It's Not That Black And White

If you are vehemently against the riots, you’re not seeing that they are important.
They’re not a bright moment in history, but they are a necessary catalyst.
Also, this is black Americans expressing themselves.
You’re not anti black if you are anti riot. You’re just not helping. The riots are already here, now what are you gonna do to help PoC feel better?

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

Like Black people and other POC haven't been peacefully protesting since the 60's and still met with the same violence? POC built America and if they want to riot and tear down the institutions that suppress them that they built on the labour of their people for free and against their will then let them have free reign. I imagine most people commenting on this saying "omg totally agree" are white people who if they were to protest anything at all would not be met with any violence, a key example being VERY recently of white people in the US protesting the lockdown who were all armed with guns and spitting and throwing stuff at the police yet NO ONE was killed. POC peacefully protest the death of yet ANOTHER POC killed in the US (nothing new for them) and they decide to make their voices heard and they're met with tear gas, running over with police cars, batons and weapons from the police? It's disgusting. Sometimes the only way to have your voice heard is to riot. The LGBTQIA+ movement only came about when we rioted (which is important for a lot of you on this forum to remember before you judge with your racist views) and yet no one has the same "violence is never the answer" opinion on it? The LGBTQIA+ movement as well, just to add, was started by BLACK TRANSGENDER WOMEN and we all reap the fruits of their bravery and courage to say enough is enough. Don't dare try to come on here in the middle of what is essentially a modern day civil war of POC fighting to be actually equal and be naive to say kindness gets your everywhere, because guess what? When POC are kind and civil and peaceful and respectful they are STILL MET WITH THE SAME TEAR GAS, BEATINGS, KILLINGS, AND POLICE BRUTALITY that you say they they would've otherwise not have got. Your take on it is from a side of privilege and of ignorance.

THANK YOU

You don't have to be pro-riots BUT you should be able to understand why they're happening.

I personally am against looting and destroying businesses, etc. But burning down police cars and stations I am 100% for. YES. You read that right. The police have gotten away with TERRORIZING black and brown communities for AGES.

VIOLENCE IS the answer sometimes. It is a catalyst for change. STUDY HISTORY.

Nearly EVERY major change has started with violence.

One that might hit home to many of you is the LGBT rights movement. They got FED UP and RIOTED.

Peaceful protests should be the focus but don't act like violence wasn't coming. People are TIRED.

The police in the US is a state sponsored military-lite that systematically uphold white supremacy.

Support candidates of color and those wjo support POC’s issues. Donate to them. Volunteer for them. Spread the word.

Sign legislative petitions. Write to your Congressmen.

THOSE THINGS GET STUFF DONE.

Setting the city on fire doesn’t. Hurting small businesses doesn’t. It’s regressive, not progressive.

You mean the ways that have been tried time and time again but have been received with mortal indifference every single time?

But violence and looting just make you a criminal so by doing so, these people participating are just giving authorities what they want, an excuse

@Gilly @JudasJustDance

I will not let this stand. I'M A FILIPINO- famously oppressed for CENTURIES by different nations for HUNDREDS OF YEARS. Then when Filipinos took back the government, it became wrought with corruption especially during our dark days under the Marcos dictatorship.

Jesus, you don't even know me and you dare to call me PRIVILEGED? Who the fck are you?

STILL, we were able to bring down a fcking dictatorship that indiscriminately killed thousands without riots and violence. What?? That's possible??? PEOPLE WERE WILLING TO DIE PEACEFULLY TO ACHIEVE PEACE HERE.

And you have the GALL to call me ignorant. I live because of the sacrifice of my people, their bravery. They prayed in front of tanks and soldiers with fully loaded guns (with ACTUAL bullets). And you know what? IT WORKED. NO ONE DIED.

So sit the fck down and think about your narrow views. You might be too blind or too stubborn to see other ways of achieving change, but I will not roll over to let your ignorance pass if it means saving the lives of more innocents that will die when things actually escalate to war.

Not thinking about the eventual results of the current situation IS ignorance.

Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

I’m proving your hypocrisy. Progressives (if you are one) are notably against the death penalty.

Yet now you endorse the idea of “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”, the philosophy behind the death pentalty.

NO. That is never ok. Not w the death penalty. Not w the riots.

You're gonna help POC by electing "you ain't black" Biden? You're gonna help POC by electing "lock them SOBs up" Biden? You're gonna help POC by electing the man who was the key inventor of modern mass incarceration?

Wow. LMAO

Wet Fire

If you're up against the police and you want to prove yourself to be a powerful opponent, violence is unfortunately your only weapon at this point. I'm not sure of the other means of opposing which might succeed. (I am not supporting violence, but I support the movement, and for that I am unwillingly supporting violence)

First of all, quoting Ghandi doesn't help your stance. Second of all, we're talking about centuries and centuries of injustice that snowballed into what's happening today. We're talking about an entire group of systems that were created so many people were left without any sort of recognition and/or are actively discriminated against. By comparing the death penalty to this, you just show how little you understand the reason behind all of this. A murderer is not a system, he's just one person. A murderer is not capable of using the force the police can use. A murderer is not a danger to real democracy. They have nothing to do with each other. You don't have a point and the more you try to defend it, the more you fall into willing ignorance.

That’s important. But now consider how many more people will be on board and participating in those actions now.

Because, my friend, wave HAVE been voting, volunteering, donating and there is still a racial disadvantage.

It hurts me to witness what's going on in the US right now. Reading through comments here, I need to say something.

I am not loving the narrative surfacing that if you are not for the riots, you are anti black people.

Some of us are like Gaga with our sentiments-- we don't want this to escalate. We do not want more people to get hurt. There are other ways to achieve change; it's not just a choice between being oppressed or fighting back violently.

It's not that black and white. There are other ways.

I might not be American, but I am human. You might not agree with me, but please think about the path of kindness again. Violence has a way of snowballing into something uncontrollable and dangerous. If you have a personal choice today, please choose kindness. Violence is never the answer, or so I'm told.

the problem is that some people want the riots to end more than they want the underlying issue — white supremacy and racism — to end.

the problem is that some people want the country to go back to "normal", when "normal" conditions are exactly what caused this unrest in the first place.

the problem is that you chose to make an entire thread and didn't even mentioned this in your original post. please please please do better.
