COVID-19 death toll surpasses 90k in US amid national reopening

The coronavirus’s U.S. death toll surpassed 90,000 on Tuesday, as states moved forward to reopen as Memorial Day weekend approaches. By Wednesday, all 50 states will have begun lifting restrictions put in place to combat the coronavirus outbreak. Many public health officials and politicians, however, continued to raise concerns that increased activity would put Americans at greater risk of a new surge of infections.

 

Here are some significant developments:

‣ U.S. stocks plunged in the last hour of trading Tuesday to halt a three-day winning streak and dampen the euphoria from Monday’s monstrous gains. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 390 points, or 1.6%.

‣ Asian American health-care workers have reported a rise in bigoted incidents. The hostility has left Asian Americans, who represent 6% of the U.S. population but 18% of the country’s physicians and 10% of its nurse practitioners, in a painful position on the front lines.

‣ President Trump has privately expressed opposition to extending unemployment benefits for laid-off workers affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

‣ The Trump administration announced an indefinite extension of travel restrictions at the U.S. land borders, and indefinitely extended the emergency enforcement rules that have allowed U.S. Customs and Border Protection to rapidly “expel” more than 20,000 unauthorized border crossers since late March.

‣ Most elderly COVID-19 patients put on ventilators at two New York hospitals did not survive, according to a sweeping study published Tuesday that captured the brutal nature of this new disease and the many ways it attacks the body.

‣ The architect and manager of Florida’s coronavirus dashboard said she was removed from her position because she refused to censor data and “manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen.”

In NJ we’ve had a cautious approach to reopening and are one of the later states in the US to open who are actually making our decisions by data. Our data shows it is safe to begin opening certain aspects of the state. Our economy needs to get stimulated again. It’s unlikely the house will pass another COVID bill which calls for another $1200 stimulus check. Of course deaths will continue to happen as people are still sick. But # of new cases remain down across the board. This notion that we need to remain totally closed is ignorant and unrealistic.
 

I’m not one of those weirdos who are holding riots outside of gyms wearing Dump shirts - but people need to begin to at least think about how reopening would look. Plus - in NJ specifically we’ve lifted some things such as parks opening 3 weeks ago and haven’t seen an increase in cases which was expected. PPE is more readily available, CVS’ are selling self-testing kits - and we’ve gotten more access to serology & testing which is crucial in the chance of an increase of cases. Apple & Google are also beginning to rollout their contract tracing. Most states are taking a phase approach / it’s not like they’re reopening everything right away.

My state started reopening in phases May 1. As of yesterday some places can be open at 50% capacity. 

Many people are not taking it seriously and don't take precautions. It's like people just got up and decided the virus was over  

I had to go to Auto Zone and only one person and myself + the employees were wearing masks. People are packing malls and no one is enforcing social distancing. 

At this point I just hope my family + friends and myself don't get it, and if we do, it's mild. There's nothing else you can do about others not taking it seriously. 

When mass deaths don't move people, nothing will. This is the same country that did nothing when children were slaughtered in schools. Can't say you can expect much from this violent and perverse culture we have.

I do agree that the economy needs stimulating because it's suffering and this entire quarantine situation cannot last forever. Personally, I'm just anxious for my own safety - especially because I know a lot of people simply don't care and many still haven't taken these measures seriously. It's scary how ignorant people can be about wearing masks, etc., and a lot of them still take this pandemic as a joke.
