Are you glad streaming ended greatest hits?

I don't really care about them to begin with. The only greatest hits collection I own is The Immaculate Collection. But they're really useless now that we're in the age of streaming.

Fun fact (or depends on what you think is fun), our minister of culture recently got into hot water for saying in an interview that her favorite album ever is a greatest hits album called Absolute Music (which was only released here in Denmark). Everyone was furious that a culture minister couldn't name a "proper" album:ladyhaha:

Greatest hits still happen. Saying streaming "ended" them is misleading - it's nothing of the sort. Kylie literally just released an extremely successful Greatest Hits album recently.

I hate everything about the streaming era so no, I'm not glad. Many times releasing a Greatest Hits was just a way to wrap up a career, but some others it was a celebration of someone's huge impact with multiple classic hits and new tracks which were a taste of what was to come or previously unreleased material. It's a shame, but then again the music industry is pretty much a joke these days compared to the past.

This.

The music industry and streaming is something I really dislike. It's ruined the way we see music I think. It used to be more about the enjoyment of a full body of work and the appreciation of the artwork - now everyone scrambles for chart positioning and you're deemed a "flop" if you don't chart high enough - or if you don't chart at ALL (like with indie or underground artists) no one takes you seriously or sees your art as legitimate.

Madonna has done 4 greatest hits style projects - The Immaculate Collection, Something to Remember, GHV2, and Celebration, and they were all excellent projects that included new material and acted as celebratory collections for her work at their respective times of release. it's sad to see people don't really care for them anymore.

I hope Gaga releases a Greatest Hits album. Maybe a 2 CD sort of thing with a collection of her greatest hits or remixed versions of the songs, and then with some unreleased stuff on the 2nd CD. That would have been perfect during the Enigma era :messga:

Oh well, whatever... We're getting a new album next week :ally:

Her chance for a Greatest Hits was during The Cure. It could have been the "new" track". But just like Rihanna and Beyoncé and Katy, there's no place for them to release greatest hits albums anymore. And I'm glad. No botched discography for them.

I never really bothered with them in the first place but I get their appeal. But since a Greatest Hits album is mostly comprised of songs from past albums, I always felt I was missing out on too much if I listened to one and I would end up just sourcing the full albums the tracks came from and listened to them instead. I think theyre good for people to collect or for anyone who is thinking about getting into an artist but didnt know where to start since they tend to contain a wide range of the artist's library, but outside of that I dont miss them at all.

I mean, what's the big deal, they all have remix or live albums... No pop girl has a discography solely made of studio albums. A greatest hit album is an opportunity for new content, what's not to love about it?

Beyoncé have. Her 6 studio albums are flawless.

Beyoncé literally has 5 live albums, 3 compilation albums, 5 EPs, 1 collaborative album, 1 soundtrack... even 2 karaoke albums, so what are you even talking about

I never had an issue with them.

Rereleased songs or not, they usually came with promo and visuals and a new song or two.

Greatest Hits albums usually acted as a bookend to a period of that artists music, and closed the chapter while bridging the gap to the next one.

Streaming killing them is the reason why certain blonde Burqa wearing popstars probably feel the need to perform the same six songs over and over and over.

With streaming and iTunes there really is no purpose to a greatest hits collection. You can easily listen and buy all those tracks seperatly if you want. Greatest hits were just an essential to fans that wanted all those hits on one CD but now we can add them all on a playlist. So I'm glad this is over. One look at Wikipedia and you can create your own greatest hits album.

Well, she says so herself. Enigma is the first and only time in her career she ever did some sort of retrospective project. She has hundreds of unreleased songs she could choose from for future releases, and yet she always wants to come up with new material.

Streaming doesn't have my coin yet. I love to watch/listen to music videos "free" on youtube. Songs or albums that I really like, I buy to own on cd. Then I can always rip it again if I get a new phone or computer. I used to buy greatest hits albums, because they were so cost effective, great music collection, cheap price. A streaming service may get me eventually, but not yet.

Wouldn't it be funny if Enigma turned out to be the Anime Enigma leading us through short cuts of songs used in the Enigma show.
