who says they want an oversimplified mess? just because something isn't overwrought with conceptual bull****ting doesn't mean it lacks depth or quality.

Well, I don't disagree with that. But that's my problem: they're not interesting images, really. Like I said, great surrealist imagery doesn't have to accomplish just one thing--certain surrealists tried to render their subconscious and thereby communicate something primal (think Dali), but they can be more purely matters of aesthetic (Tanguy, or frottage techniques, or even the wit of Magritte's paintings).

But I just don't think most of these images are very inspired on any level. But I'm not gonna write much more on the topic. I don't want to squash other  peoples' love or appreciation. To each their own.

I'm just a bit disappointed, because I thoroughly enjoyed pretty much everything about the 1991 period for Azealia.

you're just really overa--lyzing it as you do with gagas videos as well. its like you dont just watch a video. you dissect every snippet as if its supposed to mean something. this video just seems like its all supposed to be taken as cool looking as opposed to a loaded surrealist statement piece.

that being said its not my favorite video of hers but i dont think its as void of quality as you're making it out to be. in my opinion it seems like shes just left a bad taste in your mouth in general.

Audiovisual images DO mean things. Even if their creators don't want them to. Though I'll gladly admit I don't just "watch" anything. That makes watching sound like a passive activity, and it's really not, even at our least engaged.

Can things be overa--lyzed? Yes. But it's far, far, far more common to undera--lyze than over. Things have subtext, often regardless of whether we want them to or not. If I make large statements about theme or philosophy as it relates to Gaga's or others' work, I always attempt to explicate it clearly and can point to specific signifiers and recurrent motifs that indicate the things I say aren't just scholastic hackery (or as you put it, "conceptual bul****ting") but genuine interpretation.

That being said, there's no way I'm overa--lyzing lol, because I haven't even attributed any symbolic, metaphoric, or interpretive meaning to any of this (mostly because I don't think it has any). But I doubt Azealia didn't want it to: you don't spend this kind of money on something that you put no thought into. You don't whine about how Shystie's video that you star in is "so unoriginal, so not Azealia" and then not try to make SOME sort of statement or provocation with your own work. She clearly wanted to. And I think she failed on both accounts. If people disagree, that's fine, but instead of just saying others are looking too far into it, they should be able to provide a cogent counterargument for how it does work.

And I'll also readily admit that she's left a bad taste in my mouth recently (though more through her twitter antics than her actual art--I don't like this video or YUNGRAPUNXEL, but I don't really dislike them, either. I just find them unremarkable. The song has grown on me, and I'm hoping it grows even more). The thing is, I know I've written a LOT about her recently, and its usually been out of exasperation, and I'm sure the Azealia fans on this board think I have it out for her. But it's actually the opposite. I'm rooting for her more than I have just about any other artist in a long time. I was so excited when I was introduced to her work. A female emcee repping for the queer community--and not just giving pro-gay platitudes, but legitimately working aspects of underground gay culture into her work, who produced STELLAR work and is clearly overflowing with talent. It was love at first sight really. 1991 and Fantasea are both great. She's definitely made it hard to keep caring, but I do still want her to succeed and to keep delivering compelling work.

whoa. if youve obviously overa--lyzed your response to me obviously you overa--lyzed the video as well hahaha i mean im not knocking you for it at least you actually articulate your thoughts well.

i wasn't trying to attack you or whatever you think my intent was, i just thought that you put too much thought into the video. but its not like i even love this video or this song so im not coming from a place of total stan defensiveness. i dont even consider myself a stan of her (or anyone for that matter, i hate the term stan it seems so immature)
