Is Stupid Love lyrically uninspired?

Honestly, I feel like Gaga just wanted to have fun with the song, both lyrically, and melodically. Sure, it might not be her best song, but it's definitely a fun, feel-good song, and I think that's what Gaga meant to do for Stupid Love.

It's no more uninspired than Born This Way (the song). It's self acceptance lyrics are so predictable :reductive:

I think Gaga just wanted to create a song that was simply meant to be fun and full of love/positivity, which Stupid Love accomplished well imo. This actually reminds me of how some fans criticize a Marilyn Manson song called Jesus Crisis by saying that the lyrics were "cringy" or "uninspired".

Some lyrics from the song,

[Verse 1]

The present is too fast
Anticipation is killing us
Cutting up rails
Eating our own tales

So we're sucking up Snow White's powder
White powder, Snow White powder
High as a tower and ready to fall
To the street like a Viper
Like a Viper, like a Viper, like a Viper

[Chorus]
I write songs to fight and to **** to
If you wanna fight, then I'll fight you
If you wanna ****, I will **** you
Make up your mind or I'll make it up for you

They particularly disliked the chorus believing it to be too childish, or "cringey". Manson had then stated in an interview that the song itself was extremely sarcastic and was meant to be taken as a humorous comment similar to "I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)". My point is, Stupid Love wasn't really meant to be overtly complicated or metaphorical in some aspects like her other singles were.

Yes, lyrically, it's not Gaga's best. It's alright, just not the kind that we expected from Gaga. Stupid Love is more interesting sonically and the way she sings the bridge before the chorus tbh...always give me a bit of a satisfaction.

Gracious Gaga

well, its no Bloody Mary.. like, it doesn't have any artistic theme... just simple & straightforward- which isn't a bad thing!

No. Come on. Both songs are full of double meanings and turn a regular pop song into something that goes from sexy or heartbreaking. Even if they have a few cringy verses, like any Gaga song. But Stupid Love is just plain and basic and disjointed lyrically. It has been years since Gaga delivered a full Gaga song with her interesting twists, but The Fame lyrics were certainly full of them.

Like I said, Stupid Love's lyrics aren't the greatest, but they're not this "Yummy" level sh*t fest that people keep talking about :selena: I'm not comparing SL to Bloody Mary, or You and I, or Hair or anything like that. I just don't think it's as bad and cringy as people make it out to be.

And I'm sorry, but Just Dance and Poker Face do have repetitive and "cringy" lyrics. That doesn't mean they're bad songs. They're great songs! But let's call a spade a spade

I mean, are you gonna tell me these are better than "I want your stupid love (love)!"?

Just dance, gonna be okay, da da doo-doo-mmm
Just dance, spin that record, babe, da da doo-doo-mmm
Just dance, gonna be okay, d-d-d-dance
Dance, dance, just, j-j-just

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face (mum-mum-mum-mah)
P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face (mum-mum-mum-mah)

And even if you want to compare the verses, again, all three songs are on the same level. SL's lyrics aren't as terrible as y'all want to make them :selena:

I would say they aren’t up to par with her best but even those songs have more interesting lyrics then Stupid Love. Their bridges alone destroys Stupid Love in terms of more interesting lyrics. They still had the signature Gaga twist on them. Stupid Love lacks that!

Again, SL's verses are fine.

You're the one that I've been waiting for
Gotta quit this crying
Nobody's gonna heal me if I don't open the door
Kinda hard to believe (gotta have faith in me)

and

Now it's time to free me from the shame
I gotta find that peace, is it too late
Or could this love protect me from the pain?
I would battle for you (even if I break in two)

Like, what is "cringy" or bad about these lyrics? They're fine, they're on par with most of her songs...Again, I feel like there is a bias here because SL is much more mainstream than her previous songs. Most mainstream songs may be viewed as just "fun pop songs" with no substantial content, but these are fine lyrics.

I gotta quit this crying. Nobody’s gonna heal me if I don’t open the door. Kinda hard to believe, gotta have faith in me!

For a mainstream pop song I think this wisdom is carefully crafted into the first verse. I appreciate healthy affirmations as I’m aware of the scientific reasons as to why they have such a positive effect on human development. Go Gaga for refusing to glorify and romanticise destructive behaviour and instead trying to inspire and lift us up.

This is my interpretation of it. Gaga is talking about getting out a bad relationship and kind of being emotionally ****ed up. She has her walls up and doesn't want to let another person in but she knows if she doesn't she'll never feel better. The prechorus is her kind of having a raw moment with herself and the new person saying "All I ever wanted was love" it's such a vulnerable/almost sad line. The chorus I see as this frustrated admition that she wants to be with this person no matter how much she wants to hesitate. It's not her saying it's a toxic/useless relationship like bad romance shes basically saying "Fine. I want your ****ing stupid love".

Of course the second chorus kind of shows her coming out of her shell a little more and as far as the bridge is serves as a reminder to herself and also the other person you don't necessarily need a logistic reason to love sometimes it's just something you accept. The song isn't super poetic but the message is far from uninspired. She conveyed a real issue a lot of people have in relationships in a fun simple catchy dance track that she knew we would have fun to. So uninspired? No.

Yes. But no one cares. Especially with a dance pop song. :neyde:

Song is a bop but the lyrics are honestly what make it sorta meh overall.

It's not necessarily that they are "basic", because Telephone technically has relatively simple-ish lyrics, but the lyrics for Stupid Love sound like something you'd read in a religious self help pamphlet. I get she's had songs like Born This Way, or Hair, but those had catchy, hip, tongue in cheek lyrics which engaged the listener with the song.

Stupid Love, lyrically, is incredibly cheesy, imo. Still a bop nonetheless. The song itself and the video I really enjoy overall. :)

Battle 4 Ur Life

omg I can’t. not every song needs to be TIHTY. it’s a fun dance song about needing love. it’s a personal song and she clearly wanted it to be lightweight.

it’s miles better than so many other pop songs on the radio.

it’s not that big a deal.

“Fantastic, chic, freak, slay.”

JD and PF both have really simple and repetitive lyrics, yet no one complains about them

Just Dance:

Go! Use your muscle, carve it out, work it, hustle. Don't slow, drive it, clean it, Lysol, bleed it, spend the last dough, in your pocko.

wish I could shut my Playboy mouth, how'd I turn my shirt inside out? Control your poison, babe, roses have thorns they say.

Poker Face:

i wanna hold em like they do in Texas, please. Fold em, let em hit me, raise it baby stay with me. LoveGame intuition play the cards with spades to start. And after he's been hooked, I'll play the one that's on his heart.

Stupid Love:

You're the one I've been waiting for. Gotta quit this crying. Nobody's gonna heal me if I don't open the door. Kind of hard to believe. Gotta have faith in me.

just dance and poker face 100% have more "clever" and interesting lyrics.
