Since we are inside it, we don't have a bird's eye view of the entire galaxy. Instead we have to put chunks together from each observed region from different directions together on a computer and try to approximate it's shape as close as possible with the data It's easier to study individual stars, solar systems, planets, black holes etc in our own Galaxy because they are much closer.
