Yall really think we can live without protein?

Yup vegetarian diets can be unhealthy if they are not balanced.

But thats the same with every kind of diet :huntyga:

And there are plenty of other sources of protein other than meat. They key as with every diet is to make sure it is balanced.

The Chinese government has signalled an end to the human consumption of dogs, with the agriculture ministry today releasing a draft policy that would forbid canine meat.

Citing the “progress of human civilisation” as well as growing public concern over animal welfare and prevention of disease transmission from animals to humans, China’s Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs singled out canines as forbidden in a draft “white list” of animals allowed to be raised for meat.

The ministry called dogs a “special companion animal” and one not internationally recognised as livestock.

The city of Shenzhen recently approved the first ever mainland China ban on consumption of dog and cat meat, a move that has given hope to animal welfare groups worldwide that other parts of the country could soon follow suit. The new draft policy has provided even more.

“The signal is the first ever from a ministry that dogs are not food animals,” Paul Littlefair, international head of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told the Guardian.

Not good enough. I don't give a **** if they eat dogs, that's their culture, they can eat what they want. But what they shouldn't be doing is eating animals that are festered with dangerous pathogens or coronaviruses. Let them eat dog, they rarely carry zoonotic diseases. Sorry if this is a controversial opinion, I get it. I'm from a Western country and we domesticate cute dogs, but the problem with certain communities in China is how they keep the animals they eat. And they shouldn't be eating animals like bats, pangolins or civets - that's an outbreak waiting to start. This will happen again. Didn't Nostradamus predict the coronavirus will hit again in a decade's time? 🤣 Scientists warned against it for years. Communities in India don't exactly like us consuming beef - it's the same with us disagreeing with Chinese eating dog. My problem is with how they kill them and keep them. Either way, this is a good first step, but being logical here, dogs can still be food, no different from others meats, no matter how you try to fight that case. They're an animal and they never used to be domesticated.

Lets not.

A shame. But I understand how it can be a complicated topic to address as it brings up ambiguous ethics and requires us to question behaviours that are engrained in our brains. However I do think that it is still important to talk about as its a topic that affects us all.

But I totally understand if you don't want to engage in this topic on a lady gaga forum hahaha.

I understand that you dont come here for debates of vegetarianism and I'm sorry if you feel like I am soapboxing a bit.

I am just really passionate about the topic and since its related to the topic of the thread I thought about bringing it up.

I'm sorry if I upset you.

Take care out there :sara:

About god damn ****ing time.

I hope that soon, we will ban all meat for "the progress of human civilization" as the chinese put it.

I know this is gonna be controversial but I am ready to have a constructive debate with any meat eater that disagrees with me.

Yay! Constructive non aggressive debate without it having to be mean

:yay:

Nah. I'm indulging in a expensive ribeye steak tonight for dinner. Meat advanced the human race - scientific fact. I'm a built omnivore. However, I will try to limit my meat consumption where possible to do my small part.

no there isn't a way, and i'm a meat eater who's aspiring to convert to veganism, but my point is that they should hold dogs to the same standard as cows, pigs and other livestock. holding dogs in this supreme superior position when in fact they're no different to the other animals we eat is a very dangerous mentality. i'm simply saying that if they're gonna allow ANY meat consumption to continue, they should allow dog meat too instead of being picky and choosy about what they're sentimentally attached to. it's hypocrisy

So basically, don't stop X animal from being  slaughtered because Y animal still is? Stop virtue signalling, any progress is progress, particularly if you're aspiring to be vegan 🙄

Now stop wet markets, make it illegal to be unhygienic in markets, have people check on a daily basis what's going on there

yes, the way they kill and eat dogs is cruel and disgusting and should absolutely be banned, but if they're raised and killed humanely it should be legal.

Interesting thought process

Heeeere we goo (a-yo)

Im not a fanatic in this type of topics but as a veterinary medicine student I do want to bring in a couple of facts why I dont really see meat-free humanity happening.

The major problem is obv the death of the animals. I dont know where you are from and what the laws are there but in the UK and most of Europe all of the animals are killed in a very humane way. Okay, abattoir(new place)/traveling are stressful situations for all animals but this is usually a necessity in every animals life(going to a vet for example). Im not sure how you perceive animals, but they are not as sentient as we are. They dont think about tomorrow. Their life is more about quality than quantity(that's why we have euthanasia in veterinary medicine). And having dealt with many farmers in the past I know that most of them really love their animals and they want to ensure the best life for them. After all, they really depend on their animals. It's their living.

Also, most farm animals have been used for the purpose of meat/indoor living for such long periods that they would not survive in the wild anymore. Pigs get skin cancer when exposed to UV lighting, chicken are vulnerable to viral diseases when kept outdoors(the mortality rate is higher than indoors). Do you expect that people would still keep these animals if there was no benefit? No one is gonna cover the maintenance of their animals if they dont make any profit. So what do you want by banning meat? All of the farm animals to go extinct? They depend on people just as much as we depend on their meat(well for now at least)

The key is really in the standards. It should be about being even more humane, giving better life to animals rather than completely stopping farming industry.

Incorrect. A majority of animals are kept in inhumane conditions until they die. They aren't roaming around happy as larry until they are slaughtered. A majority are in small  enclosed areas, mass bred and subject to disgusting conditions. Sure the actual "death" of a stun gun may be "humane" but the conditions they are kept in prior are largely not.

Hahahah thats ok, enjoy it!

Its true that meat advanced the human race, I don't deny that I just feel like we have advanced to a point where we can advance past it aswell.

Stone tools advanced the human race aswell but we moved past them too.

Good on you for reducing your meat consumption! Thats already such a hard yet important step to take! You can be proud of yourself! :sara:

You are also cute and can hit me up

God, I read back my comment and thought it sounded so volatile and that you would come back rudely 😩 apologies! I feel like human require too much energy to become herbivores. It would be incredibly hard. but we'll see! I love meat too much unfortunately and I can't see myself ever stopping.

Thanks 💗

Did they already end the open air markets? Because that's the news I wanna hear.

This. To my knowledge canines aren't the real threat it's their other exotic animals like bats for example that have been seen as issues to start plagues

This. But it must be well planned

Also not all protein is the same so u wanna make sure when u plan a vegetarian diet (especially if vegan) that u have a right variety

Many plants do not have the full range of amino acids in their proteins so that can be an issue so variety is important

I'd struggle with a vegan diet because of my diatery restrictions tho regular vegetarian might be realistic if I had the will power :flop:
