She's using gay as a slur against men who aren't super masculine. The whole song she degrades a guy for being feminine. It was gross at the time and has aged incredibly badly. Yes, the whole song is satire... meaning it shouldn't be taken seriously. The song is about this guy who Katy was dating, only the guy cared more about his looks and his ego more than he did Katy The only line I have an issue with is "I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf" End Racism Now
Gracious Gaga 17,163
I use to like it back when it was released. But yes it is very problematic and honestly she should remove the song from her discography imo ♥ Kindness Police.

Junkyard Scavenger 122
Ahh, the stereotypical gay and the slightly homophobic lyrics. Back when Katy made hits as I Kissed A Girl, one of her slightly homophobic hits.

Okay wonderful It’s a brilliant lyric. The fact that you take it so seriously is the exact problem here. It’s a satirical song about a girl who’s boyfriend is more feminine than her. The concept itself is meant to be funny. If you really listened to this song and took the message that Katy wants men to commit suicide, I don’t know what to tell you. IcePrincess 2,787
Yes - It's light, funny song, full of irony and sarcasm. I wouldn't have a problem with it if she published it today. But this whole " I'm feeling offended by everything" team would kill her.

That type of hetero-normative thinking is bullshit. 2. It still glorifies suicide 3. It most certainly is not funny.

I prefer artists that can satirically write about cultural phenomena and provide social commentary, especially if it’s off putting to some or considered not PC. Tom Nook 37,808
The song has aged horribly since the 2000s, and melodically it’s not even good, Lana Del Rey did the whole self-absorbed boyfriend thing better with Norman ****ing Rockwell Uh Red Wine... Convict... Gah Gah...
Reject False Icons 4,777
It’s bad obviously she automatically names feminity on a man equal as Gay and makes fun of it Once again it’s okay to be a boy but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading cause you think that being a girl is degrading.
